ENGLAND’S triumph in the Euro 2022 tournament has been hailed as a game changer for women’s football in the borough. The team’s amazing extra-time 2-1 victory on Sunday over eighttimes winners Germany is expected to herald a boom time for the women’s game. The Lionesses roared to victory
in a packed-out Wembley and helping them win the trophy was Sefton-born Alex Greenwood who, after the game, was described as an “inspiration to young girls”. Greenwood, 28, was a second half substitute in the historic match and is now part of a team which has won the hearts of the nation.

The defender, who has made 66 caps for England, is one of the more senior players in the squad. She has played the sport since a young age in Sefton with school teachers recalling how she “used to run rings around the boys!” The team’s success drew plaudits from across the country led by the Queen, politicians, senior figures in the game and past footballing heroes including Geoff Hurst whose hat-trick won England the 1966 World Cup at Wembley. But locally, it’s Lioness and Sefton’s very own Alex Greenwood, who has cemented herself as an inspiration to budding footballers in the borough.
SOUTHPORT Classic and Speed event will return to Victoria Park after its roaring success last year - and will include a parade of cars through the town centre. The inaugural event saw around 15,000 people attend to enjoy the sights of more than 250 classic cars at the resort park. This year’s free event will take place on Sunday, September 11 from 10.30am. A spokesperson for the organisers, said: “This year will celebrate both the 65th anniversary of the first all British GP win and the 60th anniversary of Jim Clark’s victory in the British Grand Prix at the nearby Aintree circuit. “The Jim Clark Trust which focuses on promoting and celebrating the story of the legendary Scot, described by Ayrton Senna as ‘the best of the best’, will be a beneficiary of the day’s activities. “Gates will open at 10.30am for free entry to the public with admission charges applicable to special paddocks. Food and drink will be available on site along with craft stalls, trade stands and specialist displays. “Awards will be presented to the winners in the show’s various concours categories during the afternoon before the event closes at 4.30pm with a parade of the road legal cars through Southport, following the route of the 1903 speed trials. “Road legal cars can be entered for Southport Classic and Speed at a cost of £20 per vehicle while competition cars can be entered for free. All display vehicles will be required to arrive on site between 8.30am and 10.30am with support vehicles and trailers removed off site before the public are admitted.”
