Fundraising is a piece of cake for youngsters YOUNG bakers at Larkfield Primary School in Southport hosted a cake sale to help improve the Botanic Gardens in Churchtown. David Rawsthorne, founder of the Make A Change For Botanic campaign group, was delighted to meet the children and staff at the school, where he accepted a cheque on behalf of the group. He said: “Last Thursday I attended Larkfield Primary School to pick up a cheque for £295. “The school held a cake sale on behalf of our campaign, and we would like to say thank you so

much to all the kids, parents and teachers. That’s a great amount to have raised! “Now that children are breaking up for the summer holidays it would be fantastic if parents can encourage them to do things to raise money for the Make A Change For Botanic campaign.” A Larkfield Primary School spokesperson, said: “Families were very generous with their contributions and the children were excited to spend their money on a wide range of delicious cakes. We raised an amazing £295!”

CYCLE LANES TO STAY... FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER 18 MONTHS Report by Tom Martin CONTROVERSIAL cycle lanes on a number of roads in Southport town centre will be extended by the council for another 18 months. The local authority intends to continue with the existing cycle lanes - despite their unpopularity - currently installed on Tulketh Street, Wesley Street, Hoghton Street and Chapel Street. In a notice placed by Sefton Council in last week’s edition of the Champion newspaper, it states that the continuation of the temporary cycle lanes would “allow cyclists to use the restricted area and provide safe access for cyclists during the Covid pandemic.” Champion readers, though, were quick to point out that the ‘Covid pandemic’ is now, hopefully, behind us. Am I missing something here - I thought the pandemic had pretty well passed so isn’t it time we got ride of these ridiculous lanes that are hardly ever used?” The introduction of the cycle lanes during lockdown has been a divisive issue in Southport over the past few years, with MP Damien Moore one of the notable figures who has spoken out against the measure. Another Champion reader, Peter Woodroffe, also questioned why the pandemic is still being used by the council to justify the extension of the cycle lanes. Continued inside
