THE return of Southport Air Show following the pandemic cancellations has been hailed a soaring success. Thousands of aviation enthusiasts and families visited the resort over the weekend (Saturday July 9Sunday, July 10) to enjoy spectacular fly-pasts which included the Red Arrows, the Black Eagles from South Korea, an RAF Typhoon and a Lancaster Bomber. The number of visitors to the resort for the air show delighted both resort traders and Sefton Council, whose spokesperson, Cllr Marion Atkinson, said: “We are delighted that the return of the Southport Air Show was an amazing experience for everyone who atten-
ded. The warm weather over both days put an extra shine on the show as huge crowds were wowed with some fantastic displays. “On Sunday, another amazing line up was capped off by the ever wonderful Red Arrows, who delivered a jaw dropping display of aerial amazement. “Thousands of visitors attended the resort over the two days which will have had a real positive impact on local businesses in and around the town. We remain wholly committed to putting on fabulous events like this for Southport and Sefton. We are already looking forward to next year’s show.” Air Show review inside
QUARRY DEATH TRAGEDY Report by Danielle Thompson A ‘ONE in a million’ promising young boxer from Southport has died after getting into difficulties in a West Lancashire quarry. Emergency services were called to East Quarry at Appley Bridge at 9.40pm last Saturday and following a search, the body of Jamie Lewin, 16, was recovered from the water. In a moving tribute, Jamie’s mother, Steph Lewin, said: “Jamie was a promising boxer who loved life and had so much to look forward to. He was so loved by everyone. “He touched so many peoples’ lives in such a short time. He really was one in a million. I’m so happy I was his mum. He was only 16 and so full of life and so happy.” Jamie’s death is the third at the quarry in recent years and comes amid calls for the site to be emptied of water and filled in. The quarry is surrounded by a 2m fence topped

with barbed wire and a number of signs warning people not to swim there. However, in hot weather, groups of people - mainly youngsters but families as well, converge at the site, despite the dangers.
Talented young rugby player, Miracle Godson, 14, from Wigan drowned in the quarry in April 2015 and in 2000, 17-year-old Craig Croston, also from Wigan, died at the site after falling into the water. A spokesperson for Lancashire Police, said: “The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be passed to the coroner in due course. “Our thoughts remain with Jamie’s family at this time.” Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service added: “We were called at 9.36pm to Dawber Delph, Appley Bridge to assist Lancashire Police and North West Ambulance Service in the search for one person in the water. “Three fire engines, a boat and the drone team were deployed. Tragically the casualty died at the scene. Our thoughts are with their loved ones.” Continued on page 3
