CCGs SCRAPPED IN RESHUFFLE OF HEALTH SERVICES Report by Tom Martin
Sean received his award from Eamonn Holmes at the ceremony
Sean, 9, scoops national award for creating app to help his younger brother AN inspirational nine-year-old youngster has won a national award for creating an app with the aim of helping his autistic younger brother communicate. Sean Porter was initially asked to produce a mobile game as part of a primary school project, but chose to create an app to support his six-year-old sibling Adam instead. His younger brother was diagnosed with autism at the age of two and he rarely communicated
verbally, but he is now finding it much easier thanks to the new ‘Speak with Sean’ app. It works by using pictures and sounds that allows Adam to communicate what he wants and needs. The heartwarming story led to Sean, whose family live in Southport, being nominated for a Child of Britain 2022 award, held every year to recognise the most inspirational youngsters in the country. TWO health organisations in charge of NHS services in the borough have been abolished as part of yet another shakeup and replaced by a new ‘Integrated Care System.’ Southport and Formby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and South Sefton CCG were both scrapped on July 1 to make way for the new statutory body. The ICS’s new chief executive, Graham Urwin, claims the reorganisation is “the greatest opportunity I have seen in my lifetime to make a real difference.” However, concerns have been raised at However the demise of the two local CCGs with fears the new organisation could lead to a loss of ‘local focus.’ The launch of the ICS by NHS Cheshire and Merseyside comes just as a survey by Healthwatch Sefton reveals how patients across the borough are struggling to get GP appointments. CCGs were first set-up across the country in 2012 to organise the delivery of NHS services in each of their local areas in England. These have now been replaced by 42
But campaigners warn new NHS ‘Integrated Care System’ could lose its local focus
Integrated Care Systems. The Cheshire and Merseyside ICS, which will be in charge of 2.7million people’s health needs, marks the end of nine local CCGs across these areas. Those in charge at the ICS say local influence and decision making within the nine ‘places’ of Cheshire and Merseyside, which cover the local authority boroughs, will be retained and that local authorities are included as members of its board. Partnership Unlike previous NHS re-organisations, they say this marks a ‘fundamental shift in the alignment and work of health and care services across the region’ and is the single largest change to health and care in decades.
