Sofa firm to give away suite to deserving key worker KEY workers who have been putting their lives at risk to work throughout the coronavirus pandemic could be given a special prize to say thank you from a local business.

Aintree Sofas want to give a whole suite to a deserving person and they are asking locals to nominate key workers who will be entered into a prize draw.

Sofas, told the Champion: “As a company we haven’t been able to do a lot during the lockdown and we have had to just sit back and watch all these key workers carry on. As a thank you to all the key workers who are helping us find the light at the end of the tunnel, we’ve decided to give away a full suite and the winner can choose exactly what they want.

“They could choose a new leather suite, or maybe they want to design one themselves from out fabric range in their own choice of colours. Maybe they would just like a new chair for the conservatory.

“This is not only for front line NHS staff, as we want to recognise all the incredibly important people supporting us all.

Dejan tackles litter louts on our beaches Report by Tom Martin SEFTON Council is putting plans in place to avoid a repeat of recent problems on beaches in the area when thousands of people flocked to the coastline, ignored social distancing rules and left their litter behind.

Locals have complained after large groups of people arrived at coastal beauty spots to make the most of the sunny weather.

Sefton Council pointed out that people travelled from all over to Sefton’s coast including people from Manchester and Birmingham and at the height of the sunny weather there was an average of 7,000 people on the beaches. The weather has taken

There had been some people calling for the beaches to be closed, but the council has admitted this is simply not an option due to size of the coastline and the many access points.

Many residents took to social media to voice their anger at the litter left on the beaches including Bootle MP Peter Dowd. He

said: “It has been awful for people living in our coastal area due to anti social use of the beach area, poor parking, littering, fire lighting and drug use.

Those using these lovely amenities should act responsibly or just don’t come at all.”

Another vocal critic of the beach mess was Liverpool FC footballer Dejan Lovren, who recorded himself at Formby beach as he tried to highlight the problem to his thousands of social media followers.

Worrying Leader of Sefton Council, Ian Maher said: “We understand why people want to visit, especially when the weather is nice.

However, it’s really worrying

that people are ignoring Government advice and appear to be completely ignoring social distancing guidance. As well as risking their own safety, and the safety of our local residents, the state in which some of those visitors have left certain parts of our coastline is simply an insult to our local communities.

“A number of people put the Southport Lifeboat team at additional risk by getting themselves in the situation where they needed to be rescued from the incoming tide. Visitors need to remain respectful and protect our public spaces. Don’t leave your litter behind or use camp fires or barbecues.

“Sefton Council is doing everything it can to address the issues.”

Hospitals Charity in appeal for community ambassadors Report by Danielle Thompson

Despite the difficulties, the future looks bright, says Sefton Council boss THE Champion is back and we’ve had lots of good-luck messages to greet the return of the borough’s favourite newspaper.

Among them is one from Sefton Council’s chief executive, Dwayne Johnson, which - with his permission - we want to share with readers as it perhaps best sums up the warm welcome we have had since it became known the Champion is printing again after going online during the coronavirus lockdown.

Mr Johnson’s message also conveys the fact that the council is ‘already working on recovery plans for our communities, our economies, our tourism trade and events in the borough.

The Sefton Council Chief Executive said: “I am pleased to see that like some other important aspects of regular life, the Champion is returning in printed form.

Along with signs all around them, receiving a copy through their letterbox will be a reassurance to Sefton residents, many of them Council employees, that life is slowly returning to normal.

“The Champion has played a vital role in keeping local people informed about our work to support and protect residents, communities, businesses and economies.

“It has also helped us to pass on the Government’s messages on the need for social distancing and isolating. And, it has supported our calls for people not to travel long distances to our beaches and pose a risk to local communities.

“Sefton Council has a long history of working with the Champion including an excellent feature on our Fostering Service - something very important to me.

“Despite the difficulties we have all faced and are still facing, the future looks bright for Sefton.

“We are already working on recovery plans for our communities and our economies, our tourism trade and our events, including the development of Southport’s Town Deal, and I look forward to continuing working with the Champion to maximise the benefits of those plans for everyone across the Borough.

SOUTHPORT and Ormskirk Hospitals Charity is looking for volunteers to join their team of community ambassadors.

Charity chair Neil Masom said: “Volunteer community ambassadors raise awareness of both Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, as well as representing the charity locally. How much time you give is entirely up to you, but every hour you give really does make a crucial difference.

“Our charity is more important than ever now, with NHS staff, volunteers and patients struggling in extraordinary circumstances as a result of Covid19. The charity allows us to fund those extras, which support our teams’ welfare and improve our patients’ experiences.”

Peter Lloyd, who has just raised £700 for the charity ’s Covid-19 Urgent Staff, Volunteer and Patient Welfare Appeal through a sponsored 200-mile cycle ride has spoken of his delight at signing-up to be our first-ever Volunteer Community Ambassador.

He said: “I couldn’t be prouder to be taking on this new community ambassador role for our amazing local hospitals. I’m looking forward to volunteering alongside many more people who want to spread the word about the charity and inspire new supporters to get involved.”

NORTH West NHS health trusts have had £1.5billion of debt written off as part of a major 13.4billion ‘financial reset’.

A total of 18 NHS Trusts in the North West will be free of historic debt so they can invest in maintaining vital services and longerterm infrastructure improvements.

Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust will have £130,542 of debt cleared, while Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation

Trust will have their debts of £218,489 wiped clean. The package is launched in combination with a simpler internal payment system to help NHS trusts in dealing with the coronavirus response, agreed with NHS England.

Ambulance service sees workforce numbers boosted by 450 during pandemic THE North West Ambulance Service boosted its workforce by 450 staff during the coronavirus pandemic.

An additional 187 staff were put in place in place to handle 999 calls across the Greater Manchester, Liverpool and Preston emergency operations centres, while 150 additional NHS 111 clinicians, health and service advisors joined the team at the Liverpool and Greater Manchester contact centres.

Recruitment and training of new starters is continuing in NHS 111, with 142 staff expected to have joined the service by August, ready to support members of the public with urgent health concerns.

Temporary training centres were set up using empty spaces in local schools to help train the workers, which include student paramedics, apprentices, staff redeployed from other parts of the trust, and some agency workers.

NWAS also increased the number of ambulances available by converting 80 non-emergency patient transport vehicles and adding the equipment needed to respond to emergencies.

To staff these additional vehicles, student paramedics and apprentice emergency medical technicians have become fully operational and 150 of NWAS’ patient transport service (PTS) employees have volunteered to receive additional training and work alongside emergency service

clinicians to provide a safe and effective service.

Chief executive Daren Mochrie said: “Providing the right care to the people of the North West is always our number one priority and we knew from the start of the pandemic we would need to be ready for an increase in demand on our service. Expanding our workforce in this way has allowed us to continue to help those who need us.

“It was not an easy task - increasing our workforce at this pace and scale has taken a real team effort from across the organisation so thank you to all the departments who have been involved.

Crosby Library illuminated by Sefton Council

Sefton shows support for peaceful protests following the death of George Floyd SEFTON council has showed its support for the peaceful protests that followed the death in America of unarmed black man, George Floyd, by illuminating both Crosby Library and Bootle Town Hall.

Protests were held across Merseyside on June 2, and Sefton Council wanted to play its part by helping to take a stand on ‘racism and systemic discrimination against black people’.

Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of Sefton Council said: “The council has a proud history of supporting equality and diversity across our borough and beyond and remains committed to providing and supporting an environment and communities where all our people are valued for who they are at all

Mr Floyd’s death sparked widescale protests across America and worldwide after shocking mobile phone footage showed him being pinned to the ground in Minneapolis by a police officer who knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes, leading to his death, while Mr Floyd shouted repeatedly, “I can't breathe.”

Mr Floyd’s funeral took place yesterday, Tuesday. The police officer involved in the incident has been charged with murder.

Commuters will have to wear face masks when using public transport in the future SEFTON commuters will soon have to wear face coverings on public transport to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Locals who use buses, trams, trains, coaches and ferries will have to take the precaution from Monday, June 15, as numbers begin to increase on public transport as more people head

back to work. The only exception to the rule is very young children, disabled people and those with breathing difficulties.

The government announced the new measure on Thursday, June 4, adding that face coverings will be "a condition of travel" and not wearing one could lead to a fine.

Virus crisis spells the end for this year’s big shows

Digital Exhibition extended THE Sefton Open 2020 Digital Exhibition has been extended until July 4.

This is an annual exhibition celebrating the creativity and artistic talent across the borough of Sefton and it was meant to run from April 18 to June 5, but as it is a digital display for the first time, it has been extended.

Southport Air Show and the British Musical Fireworks Championships are the latest events to be axed, joining the previously announced Southport Flower Show and the Southport Food and Drink Festival, which was to have been held this month.

Sefton Council and flower show organisers say the events will hopefully return next year. The flagship attractions bring visitors from all over the UK and generate millions of pounds for Sefton’s local economy, supporting local businesses.

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council's Labour Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills, said: “Every autumn, we welcome thousands of people to Southport to enjoy the air show and the fireworks championships - both major events in the

town. However, it will not be possible or responsible, for large-scale events to take place.

“We understand this news will disappoint a lot of people, but we all have to work hard to protect the health and the wellbeing of our communities and the safety of everyone involved including visitors, exhibitors, traders, staff, contractors, and the many more who contribute and play a part in delivering these much-loved

events. These are the factors at the very forefront of our decision. We look forward to welcoming everyone again next year.”

This will be the first time since the Second World War that Southport Flower Show has not been held and it is a huge disappointment to the management team who work so hard to make the event happen.

Show bosses say the cancellation will cause severe financial implications not just for the show itself, but it will also profoundly affect the show’s partners, sponsors, suppliers and traders.

A VET nurse who splits her time between Birkdale, Formby and Maghull ‘was thrilled but shocked’ to win a national award.

Claire Shepherd of Parker and Crowther Ltd was awarded Vet Nurse of the Year at the 2020 Petplan Veterinary Awards. The winners were announced during a virtual ceremony held on Petplan’s Facebook page on May 28. The event was hosted by author and presenter Gyles Brandreth.

Now in their 21st year, the awards celebrated the nation’s most outstanding vets, vet nurses, practices, practice managers and support staff.

A SEFTON nurse has donated plasma as part of a national clinical trial following her recovery from coronavirus.

Laura Mercer, from Southport, who is Head of Quality Standards at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, has donated some of her blood plasma in the hope that anti-bodies produced while she was ill will help in the treatment of others.

NHS Blood and Transplant is contacting people who have recovered from positive test results from the virus and asking them to donate at its 23 blood donor centres, including Liverpool.

Tributes paid to ‘compassionate and dedicated’ police inspector killed in accident while out cycling Report by Danielle Thompson TRIBUTES have been paid to a ‘compassionate and dedicated’ police inspector who died after being in a collision with a transit van while he was out cycling last week.

Merseyside Chief Constable Andy Cooke, said: “Following the sudden and tragic death of Inspector Graeme Rooney on the evening of Tuesday, June 2, I wanted to take time out to pay tribute to an officer who was respected across the board and served the force impeccably for more than 27 years.

“Graeme was out cycling with friends in Altcar when he was involved in a road traffic collision with a transit van and sadly he died as a result of his injuries. An investigation in to the collision is now being carried out by Lancashire Police.

“Many of you will have heard the phrase 'an officer and a gentleman', and this sums Graeme up perfectly. He was a proud, family man and anyone who knew him will know that he was a committed and professional officer who just got on with the job. He was a Merseyside Police officer through and through, he loved working the football and big events, was part of the Bronze rota and recently joined the negotiator team.

“At Walton Lane where he had been the Community Inspector for more than three years, he was a popular officer who earned the trust and support, not only of his staff and partners, but also of the local community he served.

“Graeme had a huge passion for the job and that is reflected in the work ethos of members of his team at Walton Lane, who have done him proud and I know they will continue to do so. They are obviously devastated by the loss of Graeme, but we need to remember that having known Graeme, the greatest thing we can do in his memory is to harness the compassion and dedication he showed for community policing throughout his career and use it ourselves on a daily basis.

“Graeme started his career as a uniform officer at Copy Lane, before moving to Bootle. He then worked at the Operational Support Division before moving to the Air Support Group (ASG) in 2000.

He left the ASG five years later when he returned as a uniformed Constable to Tuebrook police station. Six months later in September 2006 Graeme was promoted to Sergeant at Stanley Road police station and had responsibility for Kirkdale.

“In January 2010 he became a temporary Inspector at Admiral Street and was made a substantive Inspector for Speke in 2011. Prior to working at Walton Lane Graeme was the Liverpool

Wildlife Trusts call on public to be vigilant when visiting nature reserves CHIEFS at the Wildlife Trusts are appealing to members of the public to be vigilant after weeks of wildfires, vandalism, littering and disturbance to wildlife.

Thousands of people have enjoyed and sought solace in beautiful countryside and stunning Wildlife Trust nature reserves over the last few weeks. However, chiefs at the trusts say that sadly these places and other attractive beauty spots have taken a battering as the lifting of some lockdown rules coincides with warmer weather leading to a surge of people outdoors.

The Wildlife Trusts – a movement of 46 nature charities across the UK – are reporting a huge increase of damage to reserves and the wildlife that lives there. These include devastating fires across wild areas where portable BBQs have been used; ground-nesting birds and rare plants being disturbed and trampled by people and dogs and antisocial behaviour, including littering, using wild places as outdoor toilets and vandalism.

The Wildlife Trusts are asking everyone to love and look after wildlife and wild places.

Convalescent plasma can only be donated by someone who has had the virus. It is also important that donors have fully recovered from COVID-19, and that their body has had time to develop a good antibody response.

NHSBT is currently collecting plasma no sooner than 28 days after recovery and can only accept donations from people who are able to visit one of their main donor centres by appointment.

Plasma donation is not the same as blood donation. The process takes around 45 minutes because it separates plasma from the blood as you donate, in a process called apheresis.

Gymophobics step up to help hospice SPORTS enthusiasts have raised more than £1,000 for Queenscourt Hospice by taking on fun challenges including hoola-hooping, 10k walks and counting steps.

Helena Knapton and Anne Molyneux from Southport Gymophobics based on Bispham Road, Southport, were devastated they couldn’t take part in the Star Trekk challenge for the Kew hospice after it was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Joni Falconer - busy writing during lockdown

Joni’s joy after top author shares her story on Instagram A FORMBY schoolgirl was ‘shocked but thrilled’ when she found that an award-winning author had read one of her stories!

Year 5 St Luke’s CE Primary School Formby pupil, Joni Falconer, had the surprise of her life when she discovered well-known children’s author Frank Cottrell-Boyce had read her story based on the epic poem of Beowulf.

Joni’s story was featured on Frank’s Instagram account in May, and read out loud by the actress Siobhan McSweeney, better known as Sister Mary from the comedy programme, Derry Girls.

Joni, who attends St Luke’s CE Primary in Formby has a passion for reading and writing and has used her lockdown time at home very creatively.

She said: “I have been writing lots of stories while I’ve been at home and would like to make them into a book.

I’ve read ‘Framed’ by Frank CottrellBoyce and I really want to read more of his books.

“I want to be an author when I grow up as this is one of my favourite things to do.”

Headteacher Sharon Cowey sent her congratulations to Joni, commenting on her expertise in ‘weaving a story’ and then contacted Mr Cottrell-Boyce to share her story.

She said: “Joni is now busier than ever. She has offered to read a range of books which she will review for the school’s new junior library and has volunteered to recommend books for children to read and to share her love of reading with the younger children – when she can go back to school!”

Most classrooms shut across the borough despite government green light to reopen Report by Danielle Thompson

LESS than one in ten primary schools across the northwest reopened at the start of June, according to latest findings.

A survey carried out by the National Education Union (NEU) shows that while as many as half opened to all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 in some other areas of the country on June 1, only 8% did in the north-west.

Scientists say the ‘R number is creeping up’ and is over one in the north-west, sparking fears that the coronavirus epidemic could take off again.

Many schools in the north-west will therefore delay reopening until later this month.

Some parents in Sefton have raised concerns about sending their children back to school and Liverpool city region metro mayor Steve Rotheram has questioned whether lockdown relaxation is being lifted too soon NEU Regional Secretary Peter Middleman said: “We will continue to advocate for members, students, their families and the wider community in reviewing the situation up to June 15- when the Independent SAGE Group advise that the threat may halve – and beyond to the summer holidays if necessary.”

Responding to questions about schools in Sefton reopening, a Sefton Council spokesperson said: “Since March 23, many schools in Sefton have remained open to children of key workers and vulnerable children. “The priority of the council and school leaders is the safety of the children and the staff.”

Thugs with hammers rob bike from men then destroy phones during attack in park TWO men, both aged 22, were robbed by thugs wielding hammers in Hesketh Park, Southport.

Merseyside Police were called at 8.45pm on Friday, June 5 to a report that two male offenders with their faces covered and carrying hammers had approached two 22-year-old men, making threats towards the pair.

They then stole a bike from one, and smashed both men’s mobile phones with the hammers before heading out of the park towards Southport town centre. No-one was physically harmed during the incident.

The bike is described as a blue and black pedal bike, with three distinctive hoops under the handle bars.

Detective Inspector Andy McCourt said: “Thankfully neither victim was harmed, but they have obviously been left extremely shaken by this ordeal, not to mention being extremely inconvenienced after having their phones and a bike taken from them.

“We will act on all information given to us to bring the males responsible for this to justice, and I call on anyone

who saw anything suspicious around Hesketh Park at 8.45pm on Friday to get in touch.

“If you have been offered a bike matching the description, or seen it since it was stolen, we also want to hear from you.

“We are making our own enquiries in the area, but information from the public could prove absolutely vital.

“Our green spaces are there to be enjoyed safely by people of all ages, without the fear of falling victim to an incident such as this, and we intend to keep it that way.”

‘Pay it Forward’ to help businesses survive virus crisis A ‘PAY IT FORWARD’ campaign is helping local businesses keep afloat during the coronavirus period.

The scheme - backed by Southport BID - aims to help firms begin the process of recovery by enabling people to buy vouchers for a wide range of goods.

These include shops, hairdressers, restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels and many more. You can pay now for goods or services which you can then redeem once the coronavirus lockdown eases and life starts returning to something like normal.

Under the scheme, you can pay in advance for your first pint of beer or glass of wine or gin at your favourite pub or bar. If you have family you have not seen for a while you can treat them to a Pay It Forward voucher.

Southport BID has teamed up with Crowdfunder for the campaign.

BID Chair Susannah Porter said: “This is a good way of supporting our local businesses and building some trade for when they all re-open.

“They are talking about a traffic light system of re-opening with some shops allowed to open first, and venues such as pubs and cafes joining them later on. People have already been at home for a long time and

they will be starting to want to go out and be with other people again.

“Any business can set up a Pay It Forward scheme. Hairdressers for example will be a really good one! In the last Zoom meeting I was involved with, some people on there were starting to look a little bit dishevelled! Some of the bars in Southport are doing cocktail vouchers or cocktail experience vouchers.

“Lots of other types of businesses can get involved in this too. It is time for business owners to get really creative and

come up with some good ideas.”

Crowdfunder and Enterprise Nation are providing the tech and tools to enable small businesses to pre-sell their services now on a promise to their customers to redeem them later.

To support the small businesses in Southport, the Pay it Forward campaign will provide access to free training for small businesses, to help with online sales, cashflow support and legal support, delivered by Enterprise Nation and supported locally by Southport BID. It offers customers the option to book meals, a room for the night or a ticket to an event for example, now, based on a promise to deliver in the future.

Crowdfunder will cover all platform and transaction fees.

Crowdfunder founder Rob added: “This is a really difficult time for everyone and there are lots of different things people are worried about including their jobs. One thing people can do if they can afford it, is support local businesses. Through Pay it Forward, we are committed to throwing Crowdfunder’s resources behind keeping business alive through this crisis.”

Jim Sharpe - a special tribute to our ‘One Man and His Dog’ columnist

Jim Sharpe - 1946 to 2020

JIM Sharpe, popular Champion writer whose One Man and His Dog column has been a staple part of the Champion for many years, died, aged 73, on May 1.

His sad death came during lockdown and at a time when we were unable to print the Champion.

So, this week, in our first edition back since his passing, we pay tribute to Jim. Jim was a reporter for the Maghull and Aintree Champion for more than two decades, since the early days of the paper and was a familiar face around the streets of his hometown, Maghull, along with his dog Tina and his late brother George’s dog, Cinders.

Away from writing, he loved nothing more than holidaying on the Norfolk Broads on his boat, The Manxman. He was also a keen bus (and later, trains) enthusiast.

attack but even through that personal health battle he still managed to pen the ever-popular One Man and his Dog weekly column from his hospital bed. As a result of this incredible dedication to his work, in 2016, he was nominated for the ‘O2 Stand Out Award’ at the prestigious North West 02 Media Awards and was presented with the ‘Highly Commended’ accolade.

In December 2006, this proud born-and-bred Maghullian was honoured for his ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Community’ of Maghull. At Maghull Town Council’s Annual Civic Award Evening, the special presentation was made to Jim for his “many years of unbiased and factual reporting of events and issues in the town.”

The award also praised Jim’s “own personal and interesting style of views” in his One Man and his Dog column.

HERE at the Champion we were absolutely delighted to receive all of the fantastic entries that came in for our ‘Design a Masthead’ competition!

We revealed on our website champnews.com and our Facebook page Champion Newspapers during the lockdown that youngsters were being given the chance to see their artwork on the front page of the Champion – on our very first edition back in circulation today (Wednesday, June 10).

Talented young artists sent in a range of bright, colourful and patterned entries making judging very difficult.

by Danielle Thompson A DETERMINED schoolgirl will cycle 400 miles this month to raise desperately-needed funds for Queenscourt Hospice.

Danielle Briscoe, 10, from Southport, is taking on the huge challenge in recognition of the help the Kew-based hospice has offered to the families of some of her friends.

The distance Danielle aims to travel over the next few weeks is equivalent to cycling from Southport to London and back; going to Liverpool and back 10 times; or from Southport to Paris!

The youngster will celebrate her 11th birthday midway through the challenge.

The St Patrick’s Primary School, Churchtown, pupil said: “I have decided to use my time in lockdown to raise money for Queenscourt.

“During this pandemic, the hospice is losing lots of money from public fundraising events which have been cancelled and their charity shops which are closed.

“Please help by sponsoring me during my challenge, any amount will be greatly appreciated.”

He said: “After school closed and lockdown started Danielle started doing four-mile bike rides with her five-year-old brother, Liam, for their daily exercise. We gradually increased the daily mileage until they were doing 80 to 100 miles a week. Then Danielle thought it could be a great idea to try to raise some money for charity.

“Her great uncle and some of her best friends’ family members have benefitted from the care given by Queenscourt Hospice

and that was the first place she thought of. I contacted them and they thought it was a great idea, and now is time to do it.

“The aim is to cycle 100 miles per week to complete 400 miles in the month of June. She will ride at least 15 miles a day around the local area which will be increased if she wants any days off.”

Man jailed for stalking ex-partner MERSEYSIDE Police have welcomed the sentencing of a Formby man for stalking an expartner.

Between September 2019 and January 2020, following the breakdown of their relationship, Francis Fitzmaurice (pictured) stalked his female victim, observing her, calling her and interfering with her vehicle, significantly affecting her day to day life. Following enquiries, the 47year-old, of Wicks Lane, was arrested and charged with stalking involving serious harm and distress.

At Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, May 29, he was sentenced to two years and four months in prison after pleading guilty. He was also given a 15 year restraining order.

Detective Constable Joe Rea said: “Fitzmaurice’s actions caused serious distress to his victim, having a huge impact on her life and resulting in her living in fear for months.

“It’s pleasing to see him now put behind bars and I hope his sentencing allows the victim some closure and to move forward with her life. I also hope this sentencing reassures anyone else that may be suffering that we take such offences extremely seriously.

“Victims of stalking offences can quite rightly feel unsettled, distressed and isolated, but if you come forward to report it, we will use the law to protect you and work closely with our partners to ensure you are treated with sensitivity, care and compassion.

“If you feel you have been a victim of this type of crime, please get in contact with police. If you are ever in immediate danger always dial 999. If you do not want to contact the police at this time then seek support from other agencies or speak to friends and family about what is happening. But above all else: don’t suffer in silence."

A CAMPAIGN is underway to encourage residents to ‘do their bit for the environment – even on lockdown!’

The new campaign ‘Wipe Out Ocean Plastic’ or WOOP! - is aimed at young people, young women in particular, and seeks to raise awareness of the fact that many of the products they most commonly use such as wet wipes and period care products contain plastic.

When disposed of incorrectly, these can end up in our oceans, on our beaches and harm wildlife.

Around 11billion wet wipes are used in the UK each year and are the cause of 80 per cent of sewer blockages, costing £100 million a year. In addition, 1.5 billion period care products are flushed every year in the UK. Sadly, plastic waste kills around one million seabirds and 100,000 mammals every year.
