GARDEN LEFT FLOODED WITH HUMAN WASTE Elderly couple make plea to United Utilities after effluence comes up from sewers through manhole following heavy rain Report by Henry James AN elderly couple in Aintree are pleading with United Utilities to stop their garden being contaminated with human waste after heavy rainfall. Alf and Jean Shephard say that water comes up from the sewers through a manhole in the garden at their home on Altway which causes the problem. They say other properties on the road had the same problem until intervention work was carried out, but theirs’ and a neighbour’s garden continue to be affected during and after storms. MP Bill Esterson has contacted United Utilities to ask them to investigate why the properties’ gardens are flooding regularly now. The residents say United Utilities are responsible for maintaining the drains in the area but the company say there is no blockage of the drains. Mr Shephard said: “We are now in our eighties and have lived here since 1974. “We did not buy a house on a flood plain and for the first 30 years we never had a flood but now they happen regularly. This seems to only happen to ourselves and our close neighbours. “We have written seven letters this year to United Utilities including the chief executive but with no reply.” Mr Esterson said Molyneux councillor Tony Carr had helped residents in liaising with Sefton Council and

United Utilities. The Sefton Central MP said: “Cllr Carr has been helping residents with this immensely distressing issue and I have written to United Utilities asking that they sort this issue once and for all. “This flooding of gardens has occurred five times in 12 years so obviously something needs to be done to investigate and fix the problem.” A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “We are extremely sorry about the sewer flooding in gardens at two properties on Altway in Aintree. We know how distressing this situation is. “We have already re-located a sewer to alleviate sim-

ilar issues at neighbouring properties but unfortunately sewer flooding is a complex problem and for these two properties there has not been an easy fix. “We are currently looking in detail at the area to identify if any local engineering solutions could alleviate the situation. “In the meantime, we remain in contact with the residents and are doing all we can to reduce the risk of flooding by regularly cleaning the sewer to prevent blockages and cleaning up after any flooding that occurs.”
