Volunteers needed to look after railway station WANTED - a volunteer group to ‘adopt’ the recently opened Maghull North Station, writes Jim Sharpe. The problem is that the existing award winning Maghull Station volunteers already have their hands full looking after the ‘old’ Maghull station and keeping it up to its nationally recognised high standards. Meanwhile United Utilities have rescinded their threatened hose pipe ban which means Maghull Town Council will be allowed to continue watering the Maghull in Bloom Volunteers’ floral displays in Central Square (Champion last week). But every silver lining has a cloud - and the council has been asked to conserve as much water as possible which means that they can only water the plants in Central Square twice, rather than three times a week. Maghull in Bloom secretary, John Harrison, told the Champion though that the volunteers should be able to manage to water the plants at the weekend - at least until the finish of the watering season at the end of September. “Our chairman, George Baker, had a very successful exercise talking to the shops round the Square asking them to use waste water for the railing flower troughs and we were delighted by the response we got. “Everyone is very pleased with the flower displays and wanted to do what they could to make sure they survived the very hot weather. “We are grateful for all the enthusiasm there has been shown and for all the help we have been promised.”

PARENTS’ FEARS OVER STAFF CUTS PLAN AT LIBRARY Concerns for future of reading activities for children after review of services by council

Report by Kenny Parker PARENTS fear popular children’s services such as storytelling at Maghull Library could be lost if Sefton Council cut staff following a review of services. Sefton Council admit that staff cuts are “likely ” at libraries across the borough and there are concerns that the number of staff at Maghull could fall from three to one. The council say they want to continue providing such services as the story and rhyme time service for young children even if staff numbers are reduced but some parents fear this will not be possible. Ruth McKie, the parent of a four year old boy, has written to the Champion of her concerns that the popular story and rhyme time that currently runs three times a week will no longer be possible. She said: “I can't describe how sad this would make me. “My son is nearly five years old now and has loved attending rhyme time his whole life. “His love for stories and reading has been down to his wonderful experiences at Maghull Library, all the amazing staff and especially the rhyme time. “The fact that the staff give him time and

attention, go through the books with him recommending things and reviewing what he’s read, has always been so wonderful.” She added: “We should be encouraging children to get out and experience their local library and learn to love reading, not hindering their ability to do so. “I know I’m not the only parent who is upset by this potential situation, rhyme time is nearly always full. It’s free and gives parents and children the chance to learn. “It isn’t just about rhyme time either, there is always a wait at the help desk as it

is, the staff are so friendly and helpful, I honestly don’t see how they could do their job if reduced to one member.” A spokesperson for Sefton Council said, however: “At this moment in time no decisions have been made and while staff numbers are likely to fall, we believe our overall library provision will not be affected. “We are currently working on the plans of how the libraries will operate and Story and Rhyme time is one of the areas that we want each library to continue to deliver.”
