Centre with ‘identity crisis’ set for new look Report by Tom Martin

CROSBY Lakeside Adventure Centre will be given a £3million facelift after plans were given a green light by Sefton Council.

The local authority, which owns the facility, opted to press ahead with the ambitious proposal at a Planning Committee meeting on Wednesday, July 22 and their decision paves the way for work to begin at the site.

The council first unveiled the plan in November last year after admitting the centre has an “identity crisis” and financially it was suffering “significant annual losses”.

Crosby Lakeside is a multi-purpose facility, with hotel rooms, leisure facilities including a gym as well as a bar and restaurant.

Some of the changes involve a new entrance lobby, space for 38 bedrooms, a 2,200 sq ft conference and events space, a roof terrace, a complete remodel of the building and a refurbished bar and restaurant.

The council also wants to create a ‘bunk barn’, which would be used to accommodate school children, club members, or businesses visiting for team-building exercises. The planning application states: “In

“Additionally, each facility is lacking the infrastructure required to develop and market the individual services on offer and improve efficiency and profitability.

“The existing centre is unable to project a coherent identity and market the services it offers, therefore delivery of services is inadequate, uncoordinated and unprofitable.

“The centre should be developed as a coastal gateway by creating a destination attraction and vibrant community hub.”

Council welcomes decision to include Sefton veterans in census for the first time Report by Tom Martin SEFTON veterans will, for the first time, be able to identify themselves as former armed forces personnel in the next census.

It is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It helps to build a detailed snapshot of communities and information from the census helps the government and local authorities to plan and fund local services, such as education, doctors’ surgeries and roads.

The government recently announced that the 2021 census will now include a question on whether someone has served in the armed forces following a campaign by The Royal British Legion. For the first time, it will now include a question on previous service in HM Armed Forces, providing information on the numbers, profiles and potential needs of military veterans living in the country.

It has been estimated that there are 2.4million veterans currently living in the UK, who make up part of a wider ex-service community which includes their spouses, partners, dependent children and widow(er)s. However, little is currently known about the exact numbers, location and needs of this significant group.

provide public bodies, charities and local authorities such as Sefton Council with valuable information to ensure they are able to deliver the best services they can for our armed forces community, whether they are still serving, veterans, and their family members.

Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of Sefton Council said: “I’m delighted that the 2021 census will now include this vitally important question and will significantly improve our understanding of the armed forces in our local community.

“As a council will be able to use this new information to help shape our services, ensuring that we can deliver the best possible service to servicemen and women when it is needed.

Cycling duo take on a 1,000 mile challenge TWO mates are cycling the length of the country in the hope of raising £3,000 for charity.

Craig Callaghan, 24, and Chris Downing, 60, are taking on the Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge and set off on the 1,000 mile journey on Thursday, July 16 with the hope of completing the journey on July 31.

The pair want to raise money for local community initiatives - Bootle Bucks Inclusion FC and Sefton Community Pantry.

Having coached at Bootle Bucks Inclusion FC since it was first founded in 2018, Craig wanted to do something to support the club’s community efforts - a cause he holds close to his heart.

Bootle Bucks Inclusion FC provides football coaching for disabled and vulnerable adults and children who would

otherwise have little access to organised football sessions.

During lockdown, Craig was also blown away by the work the Sefton Community Pantry did to support families in the local area. Sefton Community Pantry is a non-profit organisation that supports vulnerable families in Sefton with food, toiletries, clothing and more.

Funds raised by Craig and Chris’ epic journey will go towards new kit, equipment and supplies for Bootle Bucks Inclusion FC, as well as food parcels, clothing, hygiene products and other essential items for Sefton Community Pantry.

Four play areas reopened, others to ‘follow on soon’

Council ‘swing into action’ following criticism Report by Tom Martin SEFTON Council has reopened four of “the borough’s largest and busiest play areas” - but the rest will remain closed despite complaints from parents.

The Champion reported last week how fed-up parents were putting pressure on the local authority to reopen playgrounds and outdoor gyms for their children after months of lockdown.

This was after neighbouring West Lancs Borough Council and Liverpool City Council chose to reopen their facilities, but Sefton stood firm and claimed it was “simply impossible” to properly sanitise more than 100 playgrounds and more than 2,000 items of equipment.

On Saturday, July 25, four of Sefton’s largest play areas were reopened at Crosby Lakeside, Kings Gardens and Hesketh Park in Southport, as well as Botanic Gardens in Churchtown.

There are no plans to reopen any more, although the council say this will happen “soon”.

Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said: “Throughout this ongoing coronavirus pandemic, our priority has been to protect all our residents, which is why we have been carrying out this thorough process to ensure play areas can open safely in line with the government’s guidelines.

“With over 100 sites, more than 2,000 pieces of equipment and a limited number of staff this is a time-consuming process that will take several weeks to complete totally.

“However, we are determined to put all the measures in place to minimise the infection risk at each

location and are asking parents, guardian and carers to work with us by following the guidelines to keep themselves and others safe when they visit.”

In line with government guidance, the council’s Green Sefton team has to carry out a new risk assessment for each playground and consider how to apply the guidance to minimise the risk of coronavirus infection.

At the same time, these inspections are being used to identify any faulty or damaged equipment, which will be removed or disabled before re-opening.

Children will have to be accompanied and supervised by parents, guardians or carers while using play areas.

Groups should not enter play areas and each

child should have only one family member accompanying them.

People are expected to maintain a two-metre social distance from anyone outside their family or support bubble and they are being asked to restrict visits to half an hour at busy times and not return for two hours, to allow everyone to have a turn.

Parents, guardians and carers should ensure their children’s hands are sanitised before and after using any play apparatus. They should also clean or sanitise seats and handles before using the equipment.

People are asked to avoid touching their faces and to cough or sneeze into a tissue or arm when a tissue is not available to prevent risk of infection.

A SEVEN year old youngster nicknamed by her family after the long-haired princess, ‘Rapunzel’ has chopped off her flowing locks to raise funds for a children’s hair loss charity.

Amelie Johnston, a pupil at St. Thomas’ school in Lydiate, had 16 inches cut off her waist-length hair which she has donated to the Little Princess Trust.

The charity turns donated hair into wigs for children with hair loss from cancer.

Tributes paid to Mike Slemen TRIBUTES have been paid to the President of the Crosby Royal British Legion and former international rugby union player Mike Slemen who passed away on Monday, July 20 at the age of 69.

Mike Slemen was part of England's 1980 Grand Slam-winning side and toured South Africa with the Lions later that year.

He was also the President of the Crosby Royal British Legion, did a lot of charity work in the south Sefton area and taught rugby at Merchant Taylor’s School.

Jack Colbert, who knew him through the RBL, said: “The man is an absolute legend. He always gave a lot of time to veterans and was completely selfless.”

World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont said: “MIke was a great rugby player and a great all-round sportsman. He gave so much to the game in his playing days, as a club and England coach and as director of sport at Merchant Taylors' School.

“He will be very much missed as someone whose generous spirit and outstanding athleticism graced our sport. Our thoughts are with his wife, Eileen, and his family.”

Slemen, who was educated at

Ex-England and Lions winger, and President of Crosby RBL, dies, aged 69 St Edward's College, in Liverpool, made his England debut against Ireland at Twickenham in March 1976.

He was part of the Northern Division team who beat the All Blacks 21-9 at Otley in 1979 and then was influential as England ended a 23-year wait for Grand Slam glory in 1980.

Ten of England’s Grand Slam squad toured South Africa with

the Lions that summer, and Slemen started the 26-22 first Test defeat in Cape Town.

Slemen’s final Test was against Scotland at Murrayfield in March 1984, at which time he was England’s most-capped wing with 31 appearances.

He retired in 1986 and went on to coach former club Liverpool, then known as Liverpool St Helens.

A BRAVE young girl from Seaforth who is campaigning to raise awareness of colostomy bags for children, is reaching out to even more people!

Jessica Dowle, who is only five years old, suffered from chronic constipation so had a stoma procedure two years ago, which is when an opening is created in the abdomen to provide an alternate way for waste materials to leave the body.

When being cared for at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Jessica was given a ‘Buttony Bear’ which also has a colostomy so the child doesn’t feel alone.

She has raised thousands of pounds for the hospital and bought Buttony Bears for other children who also have the condition.

Last week, Jessica gave two Buttony Bears to her school, Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School, to help raise awareness for other pupils and teachers.

She also donated Buttony Bears at Alder Hey and visited Ronald McDonald House Liverpool where she dropped off a cheque for £210.

Jessica’s mum, Kimberley, said: “Jessica has been very busy the past few months, she’s been raising more money to support Buttony Bear and to support children and parents through social media.

“Jessica has recently been on the BBC North West news to raise stoma awareness which has since helped some families through her Facebook page.

“We have sponsored some stoma bears in Australia! Jessica is carrying on and keeping her fundraising open she will be selling badges too.”

Mersey Care handed keys to £60m medium secure hospital based at Maghull Health Park Report by Danielle Thompson MERSEY Care NHS Foundation Trust has taken ownership of the keys for Rowan View, the trust’s state of the art medium secure unit based at Maghull Health Park.

Despite adjustments to safety work practices during the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, the 123 en-suite bed hospital was handed over by contractors on Monday, July 27 - two years since the ground breaking was carried out for the ambitious project.

Elaine Darbyshire, Mersey Care’s Executive Director of Estates, said: “Rowan View represents a step change in care for service users, preparing them for life beyond care.

“It looks and feels totally different from traditional mental health hospitals. More importantly we believe the expertise and care delivered from here will be the best in the country if not beyond.”

A new model of care has been devised

by senior clinicians, working with existing service users, for the eight-ward unit. It will deliver innovative treatments which will improve recovery times for forensic patients presenting with mental health and learning disabilities.

Elaine Darbyshire added: “We’re delivering a radical reshaping of care. Our leading experts in forensic care from Mersey Care have visited services across the country to make sure the new development delivers the highest standards.”

The £60 million centre of excellence for forensic care has equal emphasis transformative care for patients and a positive culture for staff.

Innovations include immersive technology, sensory rooms and media walls, which will provide vulnerable patients with access to services and new forms of therapy, as well as aiding interactive training and staff wellbeing sessions.

Service users will have safe computer access to care plans, activity plans, ordering meals, viewing their personal photographs and the ability to maintain contact with family and carers virtually.

A cafe space also opens out into extensive flower gardens, plus recreational areas and places for quietness and reflection. Art and light displays which support calmness and relaxation have been created in consultation with people who use services, adding to a therapeutic experience of the building which is a ‘world away from older models of mental health care.’

Dr Michael Gregory, Medical Director for Commissioning in NHS England and NHS Improvement North West, said: “This is an excellent step forward in care for some of our most vulnerable patients and we are delighted to see this impressive new facility coming together for Mersey Care and its service users.”

Services for patients will begin in the autumn, replacing existing older facilities in the Mersey Care estate. Rowan View brings together expertise on a new site which already includes research and conference facilities, and will include a further development of a £33million low secure learning disability unit, currently going through the early stages of the approvals process.

Foodbanks appeal for donations of masks Report by Tom Martin

SEFTON foodbanks say they now welcome donations of face masks or coverings after they became mandatory in shops and supermarkets.

South Sefton Foodbank, Southport Foodbank and Shoreline Foodbank are accepting donations of face coverings at Foodbank Collection Points in local supermarkets and shops.

Donations could range from disposable masks to homemade coverings, which the foodbanks will then distribute to their users.

Debbie Shelley, manager at South Sefton Foodbank and Richard Owens, the chief executive officer at Compassion Acts, said: “People are incredibly generous in their donations of food and toiletries to support the foodbank, if amongst the things they would like to donate to us they include face coverings this would be really helpful.”

“We realised that face coverings are not always easy to find and represent an additional cost for people who may already be facing financial challenges.

“By donating face coverings you will be helping people to access the services they need to support them at this time.

“We are reliant of the kindness of local people to support the foodbanks in the north and south of the borough.

The Champion reported last week how MayLean & Co Limited, based on Linacre Road, have been making face masks that are washable and reusable. The fabric contains a nano-technology

with an anti-microbial coating which reacts with microbes and destroys them on impact.

They have been tested by an accredited microbiological laboratory. The firm say the masks are much more effective at keeping people safe, more environmentally-friendly than disposable masks and are made by a British company.

Lindsay Tully, director of family-run business May-Lean & Co Limited said: “The announce-

ment from the Prime Minister is really good news. I think it will give people more confidence and help businesses get back and have some sort of normality.

“We are getting a good response from our face masks with lots of orders coming in. We are having to adjust our business like everyone else.

“We want to help other businesses, schools and organisations to get back to work.”

Face coverings should cover the mouth and nose while still allowing the wearer to breathe comfortably. They can easily be made from things people have at home like an old t-shirt, or by simply tying a scarf or bandana behind your head.

A POLICE officer accused of seriously injuring a colleague by dangerous driving has denied the allegation.

Rebecca Latham was driving a Ford Transit van which was involved in a crash with a Toyota Land Cruiser on the Formby Bypass.

Latham, 26, of Crosby, pleaded not guilty when she appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday, July 21.

Emergency services were called out to the scene of the crash which occurred at the roundabout with Liverpool Road, at around 7.10pm on Wednesday, December 4, 2019.

Firefighters had to cut her police colleague, Kamel Toumi, who had suffered a leg injury, out of the police van and he was taken to hospital.

A force spokesman said the van was on route to an incident in Southport at the time and hit a tree after the collision with the Toyota. The driver of the other vehicle was not seriously injured.

The court heard that her trial is estimated to last four days and Judge Andrew Menary, QC, the Recorder of Liverpool, fixed it to begin on May 10 next year.

He renewed the defendant’s unconditional bail.

Band left ‘overwhelmed’ with support following release of debut album Report by Tom Martin A CROSBY band who dream of having a sell-out tour and performing around the world have released their debut album.

Decay, who describe themselves as a “melodic post-hardcore band”, is made up of singer Danny Reposar, guitarist Nathan Peloe, bassist Matthew Pickford and drummer Toby Hacking.

The musicians, all aged in their early 20s, followed up their first single ‘Comfortable’ in May by releasing the album Staring at the Sun on July 10.

Nathan told the Champion: “It’s been a bit mad so far. The reception we’ve had has been incredible and overwhelming to be honest. We are so grateful.

We always had a vision of where we wanted to go and so far so good.”

The band, who formed two and a half years ago, wrote their debut EP ‘Modern Conversation’, which tackles serious subjects such as alcoholism and grief, fuelled by the experiences of singer Danny.

In early 2019 they were signed to Birminghambased record label Fox Records and began to record Staring at the Sun. Nathan added: “We have gone from performing to a few friends to people paying to come and see us in

these big venues. Modern Conversation definitely shaped our sound and guided us in the direction we wanted to go in. We’ve become almost like a family and everyone has an input which is great.”

After the coronavirus outbreak put live shows on hold, Decay are hoping to make up for lost time when they are able to start gigging again.

Nathan said: “Obviously everything has been cancelled which isn’t ideal but we have plans for the future. Our mentality is that we want to be touring around Europe and America one day and hope that people resonate with our music like we do.”

Businesses warned about ‘COVID-19 inspection scam’ SEFTON businesses have been warned about a ‘coronavirus inspection scam’ following reports that callers are impersonating the Food Standards Agency.

Sefton Council’s Trading Standards has received reports that some businesses in the borough have been contacted over the phone by someone claiming to be from the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The caller has requested permission to undertake a COVID 19 secure inspection of their premises but has also claimed the business could receive a reward up to £2,000 if they score highly in the inspection.

These calls could be related to a scam because no law enforcement agency would offer a financial inducement.

Additionally, the FSA does not inspect local businesses as this is the responsibility of the council and COVID-19 is not a food matter but a health and safety one.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory, Compliance and Corporate Services, said: “This type of behaviour is both shocking and disgraceful and has an impact on businesses that have already been badly affected by COVID 19 during lockdown.

“We advise businesses to be extra vigilant and be aware of these new scams that can take many forms.

The general rule of scams applies - if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

“In the meantime, businesses should follow the official government advice, and take all necessary precautions.”

MP calling for new motorway junction slip roads to open Report by Tom Martin SEFTON Central MP Bill Esterson has called on Highways England to approve the opening of the new M58 junction 1 slip roads ‘without delay.’

The £5.5m project, which provides a northbound off-slip and a southbound on-slip to the M58, will improve journey times between Maghull and Liverpool and will reduce traffic on the A59.

The works were substantially completed in early April but the handover process between Sefton Council and Highways England has faced delays.

Mr Esterson said: “Highways England need to progress this handover without delay. There have been difficulties relating to the coronavirus lockdown, but they should now be able to confirm that the slip roads can open.”

Sefton Council told the MP: “We have been in discussion with Highways England (HE) for some months and were aware that the ‘handover process’ involved a number of stages. These included the completion of Road Safety Audit (as per all significant schemes), the handover of the As Built Drawings and the completion of an Inspection by members of HE’s team.

In addition, HE needed to process the necessary orders for the slip roads to become motorway.

“HE initially informed us that, because of the restrictions placed on their staff in the early stages of lockdown, they weren’t able to attend the site to complete the necessary processes as it wasn’t deemed an emergency.

“As such, the slip roads remain closed and the Contractor has had to maintain the necessary traffic management.

“I am pleased that, following some discussions,

the necessary audits and inspections have been completed and information handed over.

“Some issues, mostly minor, have been identified and actions put in place. These include a small element of additional vehicle restraint barrier. We are hopeful that these will be completed within two weeks and we can agree a date for opening.

“I appreciate there have been some discussion between HE and the Department for Transport regarding the order.

“The Council has previously received advice from HE’s legal team that the slip roads can open prior to the formal order being signed. HE have promised to confirm this. We will then agree a programme of monitoring to be undertaken when traffic patterns return to ‘normal’.”

County Lines crackdown can hardly be described as ‘a success’ by police May I first make it clear that I am 100% in favour of crime-fighting in our community.

However, if a professional practice resulted in a lower than 7% success rate, I suggest that it would be deemed as a failure.

In the recent crackdown on the County Lines drugs activity, police report that from 228 stop and search procedures only 13 arrests were forthcoming.

Let us please get this clear.

Kind gentleman should be proud of his actions On a recent Saturday, just before lunch, I entered Tesco Express, close to Crosby village.

Going to pay for my items of shopping I realised I had dropped £70 on entering the store.

I checked the store, car park and car before re-entering the store. A gentleman noticed I was looking around and asked me if I had lost something.

I explained, and the gentleman stated he had found the money on the floor in the car park.

Firstly, I’d like to thank him for his honesty. It was such a great gesture returning it.

Further to this, when I offered the gentleman a small reward, he refused and said he had seen me with my son and for me to give it to him.

I’d like to hope the gentleman will read my letter in the Champion and be proud of his actions.

You don’t get many people asking for price increases - but...

Why don’t all shops, hospitality and commercial businesses increase the cost of everything by £00.01p?

Changing the prices of items from £0.99p to £1.00, £1.99 to £2.00, £4.99 to £5.00 and so on and so on, will, I’m sure, help companies and the hospitality sector to increase their takings.

I’m sure the general public wouldn’t object to this. In fact, it’s probably something that a lot of people have been trying to change for years!

I recently drove past the former Maghull British Legion and was horrified to see it boarded up and security fencing erected.

I immediately started to investigate and came across an article the Champion published in February highlighting its change of ownership and subsequent demise.

I lived in Maghull from 1965 until 1984 and during that time was a member and frequent visitor to the Legion.

It was there I made many, many friends, organised cabaret nights and was the first ‘C’ member to serve on the Committee.

I see the new owners are McCarthy and Stone who seem to have a habit of buying social venues, demolishing them and trying to convince the local residents luxury retirement flats would be good for them.

Is it possible to use your publication to convey my sadness and heartfelt sympathy to all the old members as I know exactly how they felt in seeing their club disappear?

Perhaps some of them will remember me ? I hope so.

Rethink needed on Reward care workers It is unacceptable for the government to Thornton village sidestep the issue of social care workers pay How can Sefton planning entertain the prospect of a 20m 5g mast next to an ancient stocks and sundial in Thornton?

This is the only green area left in the village and only a few metres from the community Christmas tree? It’s also a place where community events happen, and is next to a vicarage where the space is used for the congregation.

Extremely rare moth is found in Seaforth Report by Tom Martin AN EXTREMELY rare moth has been discovered near Rimrose Valley Country Park by two insect experts.

The small ranunculus, also known as hecatera dysodea, was found in Seaforth less than 500 metres away from the park by Michael O’Hare and John Lloyd.

News from The Centre We hope our carers are keeping well during this coronavirus crisis and we would like to reassure all unpaid carers that we are still operating the majority of our services.

Although face-to-face appointments are not currently available, we are planning to open more services whilst ensuring social distancing and we continue to provide support by telephone and email. Carers Emergency Form Sefton Carers Centre provides free advice and support to all unpaid carers in Sefton. All carers are encouraged to register at the centre, for access to the latest news and services.

We have recently developed a new form to support carers and give peace of mind in the event of them becoming ill or needing to self-isolate. The form looks at all the needs, wants and support the person you care for requires - information that is just normal and ‘everyday’ to the carer but very important to know.

The form is completed by the carer and kept at the home of the person they care for. All of our registered carers will be encouraged to refresh their details each year, as required. The form also has information about our emergency card scheme, and we would recommend all carers aged 40 to 74 access the NHS Health Check via their GP. Work will take place on 12th August 2020.

Access will be maintained for the Emergency Services and where possible for residents.

Jeep unveils a plug-in hybrid JEEP has launched a plug-in hybrid version of its smallest off-roader.

The Renegade 4xe has a 60bhp electric motor and an 11kWh battery to enable it to be driven on electricity alone for up to 26 miles, and it can be charged up at the mains.

For longer journeys it’s equipped with a turbocharged 1.3-litre petrol engine, offering 130bhp or 180bhp depending on which version you go for.

It’ll arrive here in September, with prices starting at £32,600.

IT’S NOT so much goodbye as the last orders bell being rung, at ten-and-a-bit minutes to eleven. I suspect Mitsubishi will be getting a double round in, sticking a few quid in the jukebox, and sitting tight until the last possible moment.

You might have already heard this week that it’s effectively chucking out time for the Japanese carmaker ’s UK models, but don’t for a moment think that its showrooms are all going to shut next week – far from it, in fact.

Even so, the decision to stop bringing new models to the UK, and to take the current ones off the shelf the moment they no longer comply with emissions regulations, is a bitter moment in a motor industry that’s been besieged by one blow after another as sales fell off a cliff during the national lockdown.

Even though the Outlander PHEV spent years as the nation’s best-selling plug-in vehicle and the L200 took a sizeable chunk of the increasingly lucrative pick-up market, Mitsubishi has decided to focus its efforts on other markets, particularly Asia, instead.

Which is a shame, because with the exception of the utterly dreadful Carisma of the Nineties – which, ironically, was utterly devoid of charisma – I don’t think that it’s ever foisted a truly bad car on us Brits. Certainly, the 30-year-old Galant we run at Classic Car Weekly, which we’ve been trying to nurse to 250,000 miles, has had its fair share of niggles but it steadfastly refuses to give up, no matter how many mega-mileage drives we throw its way.

Plenty of car fans here still remember the rally-inspired Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI

The Shogun is an off-roading institution – in fact, I’d argue the Eighties original is firmly into classic car territory now, doing everything the Range Rover did, only more reliably.

And I can’t venture halfway into a column about old Mitsubishis and not get misty-eyed about the Evo VI Tommi Makinen, a swivel-eyed loon of a turbocharged saloon that devoured greasy B-roads better than anything else on sale at the time.

My own particular favourite was the Evo’s less unhinged and cheaper sibling – the Galant VR4, which they sold as part of its Ralliart range at the turn of the century.

It wasn’t as showy as the rally-bred Evo, but that was part of the appeal – it might not have had an enormous rear wing or a little pump that squirted

water on the intercooler during press-on driving, but it packaged four-wheel-drive and a 280bhp twin turbo V6 behind a body that didn’t shout about its performance credentials. It was an Evo for people who don’t like being looked at.

Maybe that’s the problem with Mitsubishi these days – we’ve all forgotten they’ve made some cracking cars over the years.

Hopefully the bigwigs in Japan will see sense, invest in more on-trend electric cars and bring them over here… and reinvent the Evo while they ’re at it.

Until then, best get your orders in before the bar shuts.
