Tributes paid to Champion photographer Martyn Snape Joel just as he is about to break a British squat record.

TEENAGER JOEL’S GOT THE POWER! Powerlifter, 18, now ranked number two in his sport after winning three silver medals at the world championships Report by Kenny Parker AN 18 year old from Maghull has returned from the Powerlifting World Championships in Sweden with three silver medals and new British records - and he only took up the sport three years ago while he was recovering from an illness. Joel Wakeham, an A level student at Deyes High School, Maghull, is the current British Sub Junior 59 kg powerlifting champion and is now ranked second in the world after his silver medal performances at the IPF World Powerlifting Championships in Helsingborg where he represented Great Britain. He also broke three British records in the process. Joel’s preferred sport was football but he was forced to

take a break from it three years ago after illness forced him to avoid all contact sport. He then took up weight training and discovered he had a talent for powerlifting. He entered his first competition in March last year, becoming North West champion, and went on to be crowned English champion and then British champion, following which he received an invitation to represent Team GB at the world event in Sweden. His mum Beverley says that he has a terrific drive and determination to succeed. “He trains everyday for at least two hours,” she said, “His dedication is exceptional. Joel has a clean, healthy diet, this allows him to train hard and perform at his best whilst maintaining a body weight of 59 kg. Joel's success at the World Championships is down to his hard work, dedication and hours spent training.” Joel's mum, his sister Lydia and dad Garry had an “amazing time” cheering Joel on in Sweden. “Joel definitely had the loudest fans in the arena!” said his mum, “Along with all his family and friends watching online and cheering him on. We are all so proud of him. “Joel still continues to amaze and impress us all so much in his success and fantastic achievements. We still can’t believe it!”

THE Champion is sad to report the death of well known photographer, Martyn Snape, who passed away peacefully on Monday in Queenscourt Hospice following a short illness, aged 65. Martyn was a stalwart of the Champion for more than 20 years and became a hugely popular figure covering our picture desk for Sefton and West Lancs. He was as popular within the Champion as he was out in the community he served with such dedication and distinction. His talents behind the camera ensured countless people were able to share their stories in our titles. He became ‘pals’ with the great and good of both boroughs, striking up real friendships with so many as he went about his duties professionally and with a great eye for a good picture. Martyn didn’t do ‘snaps’ he hated that term and would rebuke anybody who dared to call his work ‘that word’. He was a newspaper lens-man down to the core and was greatly respected for the manner in which he went about his duties. Continued inside
