MADNESS showed they still know how to entertain a crowd at Aintree Racecourse on Friday May 17. The concert was the first in a series of summer events combining music and races, organised by the Jockey Club. Madness, who are now in their fifth decade, having formed in 1976, had 15 top ten hits including One Step Beyond, Baggy Trousers and It Must Be Love and number one single House of Fun. Madness hold a joint record with UB40 for most weeks spent by a group in the 1980s UK singles charts with 214 weeks. UB40 will also be performing at Aintree on Friday, June 14

Pedestrian was crossing A59 in early hours of Sunday when he was hit
A MAN is in a critical condition after being hit by a police car responding to an emergency. The collision took place on the A59 Northway, Maghull near the Alt Park Hotel Pub in the early hours of Sunday, May 19. The pedestrian, aged 39, was crossing the A59 in Maghull at around 12.20am when the police car, which was responding to an incident, collided with him. He was taken to hospital where he was described by Merseyside Police as being in a “critical condition.” The officer sustained no injuries. The ambulance service were soon in attendance and road closures were put in place on both sides of the carriageway, to Switch Island with road users urged to use other routes. Police say the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for further investigation. An IOPC spokesperson said: “We have begun an

investigation after a man was struck by a Merseyside Police car in the early hours of Sunday morning. “The 39 year-old man was crossing the A59 in Maghull at around 12.20am when the police car, which was responding to an incident, collided with him. “He sustained life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital in a critical condition.
