INSIDE THIS WEEK: Man suffered fractured eye socket in attack before the Grand National Report by Henry James A MAN suffered a fractured eye socket after being assaulted before the Grand National race at the Aintree Racecourse. Police have issued an appeal for witnesses following an assault on Saturday, April 6. The injuries were sustained at around 5.10pm after a man was assaulted by another man. The incident occurred near the Lord Daresbury & Princess Royal Stand, on the racecourse side, near to the front rail. CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing to locate the offender and anyone with information is asked to come forward. Detective Inspector Gary Stratton said: “Despite the good nature of the vast majority of racegoers it is disappointing to see that an incident such as this occurred with a man suffering a serious injury as a result. “We are carrying out a number of enquiries and are particularly keen to speak to a man described as a white male with blond hair, wearing a beige jumper and a checked shirt. “We believe he may have vital information to assist our investigation and would ask him, or anyone who recognises the description, to please get in touch.” Anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolCC, 101 quoting ref. 19100160830 or @CrimestoppersUK.

VANDALS SET FIRE TO CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL Historic ‘lychgate’ badly damaged by arson yobs leaving villagers devastated Report by Kenny Parker YOBS set fire to a First World War memorial gateway at a church in Melling leaving villagers devastated. The wooden memorial, known as a lychgate, at St Thomas Church on Rock Lane, Melling, was constructed in 1921 and partly paid for by the families of those who lost their lives in the war. Poppy wreaths are placed at the memorial each Remembrance Day and throughout the year to pay tribute to those who fell. It is believed the memorial was set alight by a group of yobs sometime over the night of Friday, April 5 or in the early hours of the following morning. Church secretary Barbara Nixon said: “The war memorial was placed there for the Melling villagers who had paid for it to be erected in memory of loved ones who died in the First World War. “It survived the Second World War and we are absolutely devastated that somebody has set fire to it now.

The fire damage caused to the lychgate war memorial at St Thomas Church.

“It’s horrendous that people could think of setting light to it and it will cost a lot of money to repair.” She added that the lychgate is often used as a backdrop for wedding photographs. She added: “We have a lot of weddings here soon and this is such a shame for the brides and grooms and their families.” Barbara added that a bronze plaque with the names of the fallen had been stolen in 1969. A replacement plaque is now kept in the church for protection but there were still poppy wreaths hanging on the memorial from Remembrance Day

last November. She added: “It’s going to cost quite a bit to repair as it is made of matured oak timber and it has got to be like for like because it is a war memorial.” Merseyside Police said: “We received a report that sometime between 6pm on Friday, April 5 and 8am on Saturday, April 6, damage was caused to the lychgate war memorial in Melling and patrols will be stepped up in the area.” Anyone with information can contact @MerPolCC, 101 quoting reference19100160355 or @CrimestoppersUK .
