Elderly resident suffers severe burns in flat fire Report by Henry James AN elderly resident was taken to hospital with severe burns after a serious fire at a sheltered accommodation block. The incident happened at the Bechers Court sheltered accommodation complex on Ormskirk Road in Aintree in the early hours of Friday, April 5. Fire crews were alerted to the blaze at 12.35am and were on the scene at 12.43am. A total of three fire engines were in attendance. Firefighters entered a ground floor flat and found a fire in the living room. They rescued the resident from the flat and crews applied first aid at the scene. The fire was extinguished by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus with a high pressure hose reel and extinguisher. The fire was fully extinguished by 1.37am and the area was ventilated. Surrounding flats were checked for smoke spread and any signs of fire. An initial investigation has indicated that the fire was caused by flammable materials coming into contact with a halogen heater.

YOBS ‘TARNISHED GREAT OCCASION’
INSIDE THIS WEEK...
Gang of youths fought with race-goers after Ladies Day at Grand National Festival after what police say was otherwise a ‘fantastic event’ Report by Henry James A SHOCKING incident in which a gang of youths fought with race-goers after Ladies Day at Aintree on Friday have been condemned by a local councillor as “completely unacceptable” while police say it “tarnished a great occasion.” The mass brawl happened at around 7.30pm outside the former Old Roan pub on Copy Lane, which is about a mile from the racecourse. Police rushed to the scene after reports a large group of youths had approached racegoers resulting in a fight. Mobile phone footage of the brawl has appeared on social media. Suited men are seen brawling with yobs wearing hoodies and carrying weapons. Women, who were dressed for Ladies Day at Aintree, feature in the footage attempting to stop the fighting. One of the yobs is seen swinging a big wooden bat around his head. The punch-up then continues into the road. The youths then flee when one of the racegoers grabs the wooden bat. After the incident a 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of affray. He has been released under investigation and police said “extensive enquires” are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and identify those involved. Borough Councillor for Molyneux Ward, Cllr Marion Atkinson was angry that national media attention was now focused on this “unacceptable incident.” He said: “It really annoys me when representing a fantastic area like Aintree that idiots

like this, whose behaviour is completely unacceptable, get as much media coverage as they have, only focusing on the negative. “The atmosphere was electric in the area over the three day event, with thousands of people having a great time, getting on together and Aintree and Old Roan being their normal welcoming, accommodating, friendly areas. “A message from Aintree to those who want to spoil it for others , your behaviour is not welcome nor will it be tolerated.” Police said the incident “tarnished what was an otherwise fantastic event for racegoers.” Police are examining CCTV and video footage. A dispersal zone was also put in place in the area from Old Roan to Warbreck Moor and high visibility patrols were stepped up
over the weekend. Superintendent Dave Charnock said: “This incident occurred away from the racecourse, but still tarnished what was an otherwise fantastic event for race-goers and we will continue to pursue those responsible and put them before the courts.” Anyone who witnessed the incident, has any dashcam or video footage or any information is asked to contact @MerPolCC, 101 or @CrimestoppersUK. Social media users called those involved “feral rats” and “scum of the earth.” Meanwhile this year's policing operation at the Aintree Festival has been hailed a success and they thanked the thousands of racegoers for their behaviour at the event. They added: “Each day has seen a great atmosphere with fantastic crowds.”
