ARMED POLICE RAID HOME AFTER SHOOTING Officers battered down door to enter house after incident in south Sefton when gunshots fired as children played nearby
A pitta bird spotted near the cricket club.
Mystery of the exotic winged visitors from Asia A FAMILY of what are believed to be Thai blue winged pitta birds have been seen doing aerial reconnaissance above the Maghull Cricket Club on Old Hall Lane. They have been seen by Champion reader Joe Kelsall who is wondering how the birds got here. As their name suggests, the birds are native to south east Asia and its habitat is moist woodland, parks and gardens. Joe said: “How the birds got is here is a bit of a mystery but they have survived the recent cold spell. Maybe the canal attracts them?”

Report by Tom Martin ARMED police swooped on a home in Maghull following a shooting in Litherland. Shocked neighbours reported seeing a group of five armed police arrive at the property on Fern Bank at around 7am on Friday, April 6 during a pre-planned operation and officers smash their way through a door of a home. It followed a shooting the previous day (Thursday, April 5) on Osborne Road, Litherland, near to where children were playing. Thankfully no one was hurt in the shooting, but officers say this was only due to “sheer good fortune” and they have con-
demned the “reckless act.” Police also raided a property in Litherland. A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “Firearms officers conducted pre-planned warrants at two addresses in Litherland and Maghull in relation to a firearms incident that took place.” Chief Inspector Mike Barrett said: “This incident happened in broad daylight on a busy road and people will have been passing on foot or in vehicles. “It is only through sheer good fortune that no-one was injured. “I would appeal for anyone with information to come forward. “To fire a weapon at any time of day is appalling, but when you consider children were playing nearby, anyone in the community with information needs to work alongside us and remove this menace from the streets. “The criminal actions of those involved have put their own community at risk and we will act on all information provided to take positive action.”
