LET’S ALL PULL TOGETHER TO HELP THE VULNERABLE
Town council to work with volunteers to help needy while pub has created care packages Report by Jim Sharpe
MAGHULL Town Council is asking all local residents to take notice of public health advice as to how to keep themselves safe and secure in the face of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. It will be reaching out to its most vulnerable residents to check on their wellbeing and to offer support where it can should they have to self-isolate and be unable to perform everyday tasks such as shopping or posting mail. Town Council community services manager Phil Dillon told the Champion: “It is at such a critical time as this that people need to help each other to keep an eye on neighbours and see if there is any support or help they can offer whilst this situation continues. “It is the infirm and elderly who will be at most at risk during this outbreak and it would be great to see the community rally round and offer a helping hand. “We are still going to be operating from here by phone and email. “But we are pulling together a volunteer network for vulnerable tenants, a combination of council-

lors, local voluntary groups, local supermarkets, and I believe taxi drivers to help deliver food and essentials.” The council will also be working with local agencies and volunteers to identify and support those who need it during the duration of this situation. If you think you could help and offer support to others in the community, please let the Town Council know now by calling Maghull Town Hall on 0151 526 3705 or email at info@maghulltc.gov,org. Please note that the town hall will be closed to the public for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile a Melling pub is creating care packages for the “most vulnerable” in the community. The Bootle Arms posted on social media: “With the news of our loved ones over the age of 70 beginning to self isolate, we would like to help some way in making this time as easy and as stress less as possible. “We’ve a few care packages made up with some essentials and some luxuries. “These contain: toilet roll; tissues; soap; detergent tablets; cough sweets; cereal bars; custard; jam; crisps; coffee; tea; sugar; milk pots; porridge; pasta meal; raisins; biscuits; plus a pencil and some crosswords. “Anyone with pets, please let us know as we also have some food and treats for our four legged family members too. “If you yourself or a loved one is in need of one of these please get In touch. From me and the team we’re here to help so please don’t hesitate to ask. “Lots of love, Grant and the team.” To call the Bootle Arms telephone 0151 526 2886.
Hope Community Church foodbank is set to remain open on drop-in basis
Pastor Lee Jennings at the Aintree foodbank.
AINTREE’S Hope Community Church has said that its foodbank will remain despite other activities and services at its centre closing due to coronavirus fears. The foodbank will be available for those who need it on a drop-in basis on Fridays from 11.30am to 2pm. The Minister and Elders of the church will be
monitoring and reviewing the situation regularly, following advice from the Baptist Union. Pastor Lee Jennings said: “We do not want to cause panic, however, we must all recognise that many in our church and community of Aintree Village who use our building during the week are in age brackets considered at risk, or have underlying health conditions. “As such, please respect and follow the guidance above out of love for one another.” The pastor added: “Being aware of many who are elderly or at risk in Aintree Village, please be mindful to look out for and assist those in the community who may be isolating to protect their health. “A phone call to say hello and check how people are goes a long way. “Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.” The responsibility for managing the Aintree Village Foodbank was taken on by Churches Together in Aintree, along with other members of the community, following the closure of Ainree’s South Sefton Foodbank last October.
