Bumper Birthday Edition The Champion Celebrates 24 Years of Serving the Local Community
WATER LEISURE PARK PLAN FLOATED FOR SITE NEAR TO VILLAGE Alan Todd who visited Buckingham Palace to represent Maghull and District Lions.
Alan was at the Palace to celebrate Lions’ centenary A MEMBER of Maghull and District Lions represented the club at a Royal Reception at Buckingham Palace. Alan Todd met HRH the Countess of Wessex when he travelled to the palace on Wednesday, February 28. The event marked the centenary of the formation of Lions Club International and was hosted by the countess who is the patron of organisation. A scout leader for many years, following in the footsteps of his late father Thomas, Alan has contributed significantly to the community in Melling and hopes others from the area will join him at the recently formed Maghull and District Lions club, which serves Maghull, Melling and Lydiate.

Site would include lakes, mountain bike track and zip wire with nature trail Report by Henry James A LARGE leisure park and nature reserve could be created near Lydiate. Under proposals floated by a local landowner, a leisure park including water sports facilities, a mountain bike track and zip wire would be created on a 22 acre site close to the village. The development would be built on what is currently agricultural land off Hall Lane and Southport Road in Lydiate. Access would be off Southport Road with a car park on the site. No formal planning application has been made yet but the person who has proposed the development, a Mr Robinson of Brookside Farm, has already submitted a pre-planning application to Sefton Council at the end of last year. Lydiate Parish Council last week were told that soil taken from creating the lakes would be used on site to mound up the mountain bike track. They were told that it was hoped the facility
would attract up to 200 visitors on a good summer's day with a charge of around £5 for access. It is anticipated that the site would not be used much in the winter and no floodlighting is planned. Over a year around 15,000 to 20,000 people could visit the facility. It would be run by a staff of around six people engaged with training, maintenance and water sports supervision. Lydiate parish councillor Tony Robertson said: “The plans got a frosty reception from most residents but we were told that the developer had letters of support from some local schools, business and the youth groups. “I got the impression that the developer was testing the water and looking for ideas to develop his plans from locals and that things may well change prior to any formal planning application being made to Sefton Council. “I don’t recall any proposals being made to take this piece of land out of the green belt or to develop it during Sefton Council’s controversial Local Plan process which has only just ended. “To me that process was the obvious time to have raised such plans. “The Parish Council will respond to any formal planning application that is submitted when the full facts surrounding the matter are known.”
