INSIDE THIS WEEK: Orchestra to perform for free at Sefton Park MAGHULL Wind Orchestra is set for its first outing of the year when the popular band performs a free concert at the Palm House in Liverpool’s Sefton Park this Sunday (February 10). MWO’s concerts at the Palm House have attracted full houses over recent years and musical director Phil Shotton said: “This is a brilliant way to start the year for us. “The Palm House is a lovely venue and the audience is really appreciative. “We are looking forward to playing some music that is new to us as well as some of our established pieces.” The orchestra’s set-list for Sunday ranges from tunes from musicals like The Lion King and Mary Poppins, to a new arrangement of the Queen hit Bohemian Rhapsody, to a lovely version of the Irish folk song The Mountains of Mourne, ending with a medley of Beatles hits. The concert starts at 2pm. Admission is free. Refreshments will be available. Maghull Wind Orchestra celebrated its 40th anniversary last year with a special performance at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall. Phil added: “The band is a community orchestra which welcomes musicians of all standards, without audition or charging any subscriptions. “New members are always welcome and can find out more at the band’s website, www.maghullwindorchestra.co.uk, or by going along to their regular rehearsals at Maghull Town Hall on Tuesday evenings at 7.15pm.”

PENSIONER’S PLEA TO STOP DISABLED PARKING BAY ABUSE Focus On Business Cover.indd 1

Able-bodied drivers regularly give shopper, 78, a ‘mouthful’ when he asks them to move their vehicles Report by Kenny Parker
Terrence Gainsford-Payne holding a parking ticket which he was issued.
A DISABLED pensioner who is fed up with able-bodied motorists hogging the disabled bays at Maghull Central Square says the parking firm which manages the car park should do something about it. Terrence Gainsford-Payne has difficulty walking any distance due to issues with his spine and hip and so requires the use of a blue badge and disabled bays in car parks. The 78 year old visits Maghull Central Square every day but most of the time he is not able to actually park in the disabled bays because they are full, often with taxis and vans, driven by people who are not disabled. They often give him a mouthful of abuse when he questions them.
“If you have to mention to them 'Do you mind not parking there?’ you just get a mouth full of bad language and told ‘We can park where we want.’ “My wife has spoken to a few people too and she has had awful language in return. Indeed some of the women are worse than the men. “We don’t say anything now because we just get more of the same.” Terrence, who has lived in Maghull for 25 years, says he believes that the parking company should be doing more to stop people parking in the disabled bay without a blue badge. “If they could stop people parking where they do, there would not be a problem,” he said, “But nobody is doing anything about it.” Euro Parking Services (EPS) which manages the car park has not responded to a request for comment.
