INSIDE THIS WEEK: Ukulele band set to play at city festival MAGHULL and District Ukulele Band (MADUkes) and Northern Ukes are to take part in a uke fest in Liverpool City Centre as part of World Ukulele Day. Following on from the success of the event last year, which raised £3,000 for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, more than 25 bands from across the region will be descending on Liverpool on Sunday February 2 to perform on stages around Liverpool One and the Bierkeller bar. As last year, the bands will team up for a mass ukulele performance at 3pm outside John Lewis when shoppers will be invited to take part in a sing-along while donating to charity. Last year, shoppers were treated to ukulele renditions of You Are My Sunshine, Folsom Prison Blues and Bring Me Sunshine. It will be the biggest ever ukulele performance ever seen in Liverpool. MADUkes will be playing outside John Lewis department store at about 1.45pm and then at the after party at Bierkeller at about 5pm. The party will be hosted by BBC radio DJ Janice Long. Other bands taking part include Splintered Ukes, the drummer of which is Peter Norman from Old Roan, Ormskirk Ukulele Band, and from Crosby – The Travelling Wannabes and The Secret Ukulele Band. Janice Long is taking part after the Splintered Ukes played at her wedding. The event is free with performances taking place from 1pm around Liverpool One.

ROADWORKS RETHINK DEMAND AFTER WEEK OF TRAFFIC CHAOS

Call for better timing of projects after drivers endure huge delays Report by Kenny Parker

CALLS are being made for better coordination of roadwork schemes after motorists in Maghull endured more than a week of misery after a combination of two sets of lane closures and traffic lights failure caused chaos for drivers. Roadworks on Northway in Maghull together with traffic lights failure on Brooms Cross Road piled on the agony for drivers already affected by significant roadworks on Edge Lane in Thornton affecting traffic in and out of the town. Drivers reported journey times of more than an hour to travel just a few miles, leading to staff arriving late for work, children late for school and appointments being missed. There were also fears the congestion would restrict access for the emergency services. MP Bill Esterson has called on Sefton Council to better coordinate when different roadwork projects take place to avoid excessive delays. The Sefton Central MP said: “Changes at the

Roadworks at Northway, Maghull.

N orthway roadworks have made a bad situation even worse and I have urged Sefton Council to consider how it might be done in a different way to reduce the impact on congestion. “People are also worried that they or their families or friends might be put at risk because of road closures that would make it more difficult for emergency vehicles to get through.” Sefton Council told Mr Esterson that the temporary

lights at Northway near to Switch Island were adjusted on Tuesday, January 21 to allow the maximum of 90 seconds for both northbound and southbound A59 traffic. The lights on the side roads (Dover Road and Liverpool Road South) were also adjusted to turn green only if there is a car waiting. Sefton Council told the MP that the delays were Continued inside
