CONCOURSE SHOPPERS EVACUATED FOLLOWING BLAZE SCARE Report by Henry James
The Concourse is evacuated following a fire
BOSSES at the Concourse have spoken out to reassure residents about the safety of the shopping centre after the building had to be evacuated when a fire started in the basement of the complex. Firefighters were called to the premises on Southway just after 2pm last Friday, (December 6). A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Four fire engines, including one
from Ormskirk, two from Skelmersdale and one from Greater Manchester were called to the incident at the Concourse. The fire involved a recycling compactor in the basement of the shopping centre and the building was evacuated.” There were no casualties. Following the drama, Gary Mitchell, centre manager of the Concourse, said staff put into place well-rehearsed evacuation procedures, which meant the centre was evacuated in just six minutes. N o-one was hurt and the centre sustained no damage.
