Bulky household waste collection service relaunched WEST Lancashire Borough Council is relaunching its bulky household waste collection service on Tuesday, November 6 to help residents dispose of their waste responsibly. It had to be temporarily suspended following the third party provider used by the authority no longer being able to provide this valuable collection service to the community.
The council has been looking at alternative ways in which the service can be delivered and the collection service will now be carried out by the authority’s Street Scene Service. Residents will be able to book collections from this week (starting Monday October 29) online or by contacting customer services and collections will start the following week.
Collections will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, depending on the area people live in. For more details about the service and to book a collection, go to the website at www.westlancs.gov.uk/refuse and click on the link for collections of bulky household items.

“Residents and businesses are contacting me to express their frustration and fears about the impact this will have on their lives and their businesses. Some workers could end up unemployed if they can’t find alternative means. “I have written to both West Lancashire Borough Council and Lancashire County Council to get an update on the situation

and see what can be done to support those workers affected.” A spokesman for the borough council responded: “The Skelmersdale Demand Responsive Transport Scheme, a subsidised taxi service for individuals who had recently come back into employment after securing jobs at businesses on Pimbo Employment Area, has been running for six years. It has been funded by developer contributions secured from new developments in Pimbo Employment Area.

Council says project was only ever meant to be a temporary measure and efforts to secure further funding support have failed
Report by Henry James ROSIE Cooper has slammed a decision to axe the Skelmersdale Employment Transit scheme. The taxi scheme, funded by developer contributions secured through planning permissions for development on Pimbo Industrial Estate, provided transport for many Skelmersdale residents in areas where inadequate or unavailable public transport is a real barrier for people wishing to work. Now Lancashire County Council have announced they will no longer be administering the scheme as West Lancashire Borough Council informed them they are no longer in a position to fund it. West Lancs MP Ms Cooper said: “This taxi scheme has been a lifeline to hundreds of workers for many years who otherwise had no means of transport available to them to get to work. “Many travel for shift work early in the morning or late at night, or use the scheme for standard working hours where public transport doesn’t service.

“As such, the scheme was only ever anticipated to continue until that funding was all spent, unless other sources of funding could be identified. “Staff have made several unsuccessful attempts to secure funding support from local businesses whose employees used the service in order to enable the scheme to continue.

The council has had its funding from central government reduced year-on-year for the best part of a decade and this is set to continue until 2020. As a result, the council is not in a position to provide subsidised travel to Pimbo Employment Area. Consequently, the lack of funding support from local businesses left the council with no option but to take the difficult decision to bring the scheme to a close due to a lack of funds. “It should be noted however, that the scheme was only ever intended to provide help to those newly-returned to work for a short period, to enable them time to save some money in order to make arrangements for their own transport to work on a more permanent basis. “So all members of the scheme were aware that their membership of the scheme was time-limited, and not a permanent solution for transport to work.”
