MP calls for county council to crackdown on unsafe parking near to borough’s schools ROSIE Cooper has called on Lancashire County Council to carry out increased parking enforcement near schools in the interests of the safety of both pupils and neighbours. People living within close proximity to schools have long called for more action to be taken against drivers, including parents, who cause obstruction to residents attempting to leave their properties, particularly during the early morning school drop-off. Inconsiderate parking from drivers has also led to safety concerns with residents pulling out of driveways with little to no vision of passing cars or whether pupils are walking on the road.

Lancashire County Council has recently announced a roll-out of ‘flying squads’ which will target parking at local authority schools in the near future. And with many residents having contacted her over this issue, the West Lancs MP is urging the county council to ensure that the borough’s schools are visited. She said: “School drop-off parking has been a major issue for many residents who have contacted me living near to a range of different schools across West Lancashire. “The priority must be the safety of the children, but also other

pedestrians and motorists who are being put at risk due to inconsiderate parking, including blocking driveways or vision and even those who are blocking the footpath to the extent where wheelchair-users are being forced onto the highway. “Having regularly contacted Lancashire County Council and campaigning on this issue for some time, I am pleased with the recent announcements, but have written again to the authority to ensure West Lancashire schools are targeted and the concerns of my constituents are addressed.

POLICE are appealing for information after a teenager was left needing plastic surgery following a robbery in Skelmersdale. The 18-year-old victim was riding his push bike along a path between Birleywood Health Centre and Christ the Servant Church at about 10.15pm on Wednesday, October 3 when he was approached by three men. The attackers, also aged about 18 and wearing dark clothing and possibly balaclavas, attacked the victim by slashing him across the face before stealing his bike and iPhone. He is being treated in hospital for his injuries which will need plastic surgery. Detective Constable Andy Gill, of Skelmersdale Police, said: “This was a nasty assault which has left a young man with some serious injuries. I would appeal

to anyone with information or who saw anything suspicious in the area to get in touch.” Anyone with information can contact police on 101 quoting log number 1603 of October 3 or independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. This latest attack follows reports of security staff at the Concourse shopping centre being threatened by a man with a carving knife last month, and the recent arrest of a 19-year-old for stabbing a 20year-old man outside the Concourse in June. Incidents

West Lancs MP Rosie Cooper said in July that she had been in regular contact with Lancashire’s Chief Constable and has also asked to meet the Home Secretary to discuss the increase in crime and violence in West Lancashire which also included an arson attack and several other kniferelated incidents.

She said at the time that residents believed that cuts to the policing budget means that there aren’t enough police on the streets protecting them. However, following the latest incident the MP said: “I met with the recently appointed Chief Inspector Ian Jones on Friday who outlined to me some of his short-term and longer-term plans for tackling knife crime in Skelmersdale and West Lancashire. “I am pleased already to see the increased level of beat officers in the Digmoor area and also the necessary increase in the number of stop and searches being carried out. “Alongside the police, I would call on anyone who has any information linked to this recent violent incident, or any other incident relating to knife crime or is aware of persons carrying knives to report to the police so that action can be taken to safeguard all our residents.” Lancashire Police has been asked to comment on the MP’s statement.
