INSIDE THIS WEEK:

Hotter duo hit the road for 100km mission

TWO employees at Hotter shoes are set to cycle more than 100km from their base in Skelmersdale to their Llandudno store in a bid to raise vital funds for the shoemaker’s charity partner, Marie Curie. The pair, Martyn Gordon and David Jackson, have both worked at Hotter for more than 15 years and are hoping to raise at least £500. Tomorrow (Thursday, September 27) they will depart from Hotter HQ in the early hours of the morning bidding to to reach the Hotter store in Llandudno by lunchtime and delivering a special parcel to one of the store’s best customers. Martyn, head of business intelligence at Hotter, said: “We’ve been training extensively for this challenge combining cycling with running to help increase our stamina. “We’re both cycling enthusiasts so we have a passion for events like this and can’t wait to complete the challenge; it’s also a great feeling doing something for a good cause.” The special delivery - a pair of limited edition Pixie Daffodil boots, created exclusively for the charity by Hotter - will be gifted to the store’s VIP customer by the duo. The boots are the second limited edition to be created for Marie Curie, and with every pair sold £20 is given to the charity, which helps pay for one hour of nursing care. The duo’s challenge will help Hotter reach their fundraising target of £75,000.

CALL TO SUPPORT BID TO END DUMPED TROLLEY BLIGHT Report by Henry James RESIDENTS in Skelmersdale are being urged by West Lancs Council to support a national campaign set up to prevent shopping trolleys being dumped as new figures show the extent of the problem. A total of 520,000 abandoned shopping trolleys were returned to UK supermarkets in 2017 (1,400 per day) according to statistics compiled by Wanzl, the trolley and retail equipment manufacturer. Industry estimates suggest that the problem could be much worse however, with closer to a million trolleys clogging up towns, cities and rivers across the UK. The figures show that from 2017 the trolley loss figure in Skelmersdale was 331. The cost to retailers is £35m or £95,000 every day. Council Parks and Countryside Rangers in West Lancashire organise a number of ‘clean-up’ sessions with volunteer groups during the year, where items such as trollies are removed from the town’s river Tawd. Through these events more than 30 trollies were collected from Tawd Valley Park in 2017 with another 40 collected from other sites around the borough. Now Wanzl, in an initiative backed by the borough council, is calling on members to help report abandoned trolleys by downloading the newly-

enhanced and free-to-use Trolleywise app. Residents are being asked to take a photo of dumped trolleys using the app and the nearest Trolleywise collection team will pick it up and return it to its rightful owner - if in a useable condition. When a trolley is reported via the app, the user will get an immediate message confirming if the trolley can be collected and then another message when the trolley has been returned. Heidi McDougall, West Lancs Council’s director of leisure and environment, said: “The council would also ask people to respect their communities and the Tawd Valley Park by not leaving trollies and

other rubbish. If residents do see an abandoned trolley they should report it to Trolleywise as this will speed up the process of getting the trolley back to where it should be."” West Lancs MP, Rosie Cooper has also backed the work of Wanzl and commented: “Ten years ago I met with Trolleywise at the Tawd along with the late Councillor Barry Nolan to discuss their project and sadly it seems trolley pollution is still an issue. “Stealing and dumping trolleys should be treated just like any other theft or littering and those responsible fined and punished accordingly. “We also need everyone to do their best to tackle the problem, including supermarkets considering what preventative measures they can take to stop trolleys being taken off their sites in the first place. It must be cost-effective to prevent trolleys being stolen. “Having worked with Trolleywise previously, I hope their work can help reduce the number of trolleys dumped in fields, rivers and on the roadside, and welcome their new app to assist them in this.”
