FURY OVER GREEN LIGHT FOR LATHOM SOLAR FARM PLAN
Council claims benefits of scheme outweigh harm but residents say decision shows disdain for local community and heritage Report by Henry James
FURIOUS residents have accused West Lancs Council of ignoring community concerns and ‘treating local heritage with disdain’ by giving the green light to plans to build a solar farm on a site in Lathom believed to have been used to bury horses that served in the First World War. However, the authority said that after taking these matters into consideration it was decided that the benefits of the proposals outweighed the harm. And despite what they described as “some vocal opposition”, developers Lighsource BP claimed “the majority of the feedback has been supportive.” Local campaigners though said the only support for the scheme had come employeers or non-residents. Lightsource BP and NSG want to place the solar installation at Lord’s Cottage, Hall Lane, which was part of the Lathom Park estate where more than 200,000 horses were trained for service in the 1914-18 war. The plant is strongly opposed by local residents’ groups, including the Skelmersdale Veterans’ Association, who gathered a 400-name petition and turned up to support residents at the meeting of the planning committee last Thursday. The veterans were initially refused entry to the meeting on health and safety grounds but were eventually allowed in after removing the pointed heads of the flagpoles bearing their standards. A spokesperson for Lathom residents against the proposal, said: “Within yards of this farmhouse, closely linked to the Civil War siege of 1644, a field of glass will grow to blight the landscape and take precious Green

Unlike normal folk NSG seem incapable of negotiating a deal with their energy supplier and must resort to theft of Green Belt to support their growing drain on the National Grid.

“Despite a 400-signature petition (all genuine residents) and despite continued protest and opposition highlighted in the media, NSG along with Lightsource pushed ahead and ignored all concerns. “The history and heritage of Lathom was particularly treated with disdain, despite the appeal by Lathom Park Trust in their letter of objection for a watching brief and after much anecdotal evidence came forward about the Continued inside
