WEST Lancashire College has started discussions with the borough council with a view to forming a partnership that will allow college facilities to continue to be available to the community outside of its usual working hours. If successful it will mean the town’s disability football team the Skelmersdale Men-Aces can continue to use the college for their winter training. Last week the Champion reported on how the manager of the Men-Aces, Carl Eaton had been told that from August 31 the sports hall at the college’s campus would no longer be available for commercial hire. Officials at the college had said that due to Government cuts it could no longer afford to hire out the facility outside of student hours. In the future the two organisations are also planning to work together to enhance partnerships in a range of different ways that will support student employability, community partnerships and shared use of space. Councillor Yvonne Gagen, the council’s cabinet member for leisure, said: “I am delighted that the council and the college are working together so that these excellent facilities will be available for residents to use outside of normal working hours.” And a relieved Carl Eaton commented: “This is a fantastic result, the college is a great facility in an ideal location, and all parties working together for the same reason can only be good for our local community. “We have been told that we can use the hall now from September 17 until early April. The college added that for the first six weeks we can use the facilities free of charge, which is a great gesture. “There had been a massive outcry last week Continued inside
