MUSIC PAIR BID TO DRUM UP FUNDS FOR CANCER CHARITIES Report by Henry James TWO musicians from Skelmersdale are aiming to drum up support - and cash - for charity by taking part in a sponsored scooter trip across Ireland. Pals Mick Dee and Joe McDonald will be donning their crash helmets for an Emerald Isle experience with a difference when they set out on the 450mile trip, taking in both Northern Ireland and the Republic, and are hoping to raise at least £2,000. The 59-year-old pair are set to disembark from the ferry in Belfast on Friday, May 24 before travelling from County Antrim through County Donegal on to County Sligo, County Galway, County Kildare and then on to Dublin where they will be due to catch the ferry back to Liverpool on Wednesday, May 29. The duo are members of the tribute act The UnSpecials, which plays two tone and ska music and are also part of The Specialized Project, which was started in 2012 to fundraise to improve the lives of teenagers and young adults who have cancer or are living in difficult circumstances. The project brings together amateur and professional musicians who create musical projects to raise funds for cancer research and support agencies, such as The Teenage Cancer Trust, The National Foundation for Youth Music and Tonic Music for Mental Health.

Pals set to hit the road for 450-mile sponsored scooter trip around Ireland

Joe and Mick are set to scooter around Ireland for charity.

Mick, from Ashurst, and Joe, from Old Skelmersdale, along with six other band members from The Un-Specials have collected more than £17,000 for charity over the last eight years with a

number of fundraising events including a scooter run to Bournemouth and back. Mick said: “We will be visiting a number of towns and villages on route and hope to arrange some other fundraising events during our journey. “Over the last six years we have undertaken various charity events with our friends The Un-Specials and to date we are proud to say we’ve managed to help raise more than £17k for the Specialized projec, www.specializedproject.co.uk, supporting our chosen charity The Teenage Cancer Trust among others.” Target Mick and Joe’s ferry fares have been sponsored by The Vic Public House in Old Skem but the duo will pay all other costs - such as hotels and fuel - themselves. Mick added: “This year, we are seeking sponsorship from family, friends and work colleagues to help us raise our target of £2,000. “We would also appreciate any other help to support this fantastic cause. All sponsors will be entered into a raffle to win a framed Northern Soul print signed by Northern Soul photographer Brian Cannon.” For details of how to make a donation go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/unspecials/.

The damaged rope swing.

Vandals target park play area

AN appeal for information has been launched by West Lancashire Borough Council after newly-installed play equipment at Stanley Coronation Park in Sandy Lane, Skelmersdale was vandalised by arsonists in the early hours of Easter Monday. The rope swing, which has proved a real favourite with local families, was set alight damaging the equipment and the surface area underneath. The arsonists struck just months after the swing had been put in place and the incident has met with disappointment by officers at the borough council. Heidi McDougall, director of leisure and environment, said: “This deliberate attack of vandalism is so disappointing to see after the recent investment in the park for all the community to enjoy. “Funding for the provision of new play areas is limited and we were so delighted when the new equipment was installed.” The council only announced in February that the new play equipment had been installed and was ready to be used. At the time they said the play apparatus was installed “ahead of schedule” and is “already proving a popular attraction.” Any information regarding this incident can be reported to the police on 101 giving log number LC-20190430-0195; or the borough council on 01695 585144.
