cer research and support organisations nationwide. Tom completed the London race in three hours, 41 minutes and 18 seconds and although that was some 11 minutes outside his personal best, he was thrilled with this result given the demanding conditions on the day as temperatures soared. He said: “The conditions were really harsh but the event organisers were superb, having made provision for the additional water and refreshments required by runners.

A KEEN runner from Skelmersdale is a third of the way through a gruelling marathon challenge to raise money in memory of family and friends lost to cancer. Tom McDermott, assemblies manager at Flowtech Fluidpower’s purchasing and logistics centre in Pimbo Road, completed the London Marathon despite the crippling heat. Now he is planning to follow up at the Rotary Shakespeare Marathon on Sunday, May 13 and the Liverpool Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon on Sunday, May 20. The 30-year-old has witnessed close friends and family suffer and sadly lose their fight against cancer. And after applying every year for the last five years for the London event, he finally secured a place in the 40,000-plus line-up this year to pay tribute to former family and friends by raising funds for North West Cancer Research (NWCR). The North West of England has some of the highest cancer incidence rates in the UK, with almost 45,000 people per year receiving a cancer diagnosis. And NWCR is the only independent cancer research

“It was tough seeing people suffer with the heat. I could have completed the run in a quicker time but was sensible, keeping my goal in mind to make it to the finish line.” Thanks to valuable support from family, friends and colleagues, Tom smashed his fundraising target of £1,500, raising moe than £3,400 to date. And he is aiming to boost that total further when he completes his triple challenge. He said: “Crossing the finish line and the support I received to reach the sponsorship target has been incredible, thank-you so much to everyone who’s supported me and NWCR.”
