Police move to allay fears over closure of station
PLEDGE TO KEEP THE TOWN SAFE Report by Henry James SKELMERSDALE Police have moved to allay fears about the possible repercussions of the plan to close the town’s station for up to 18 months by stating they are doing “everything in their power” to keep the town safe. More than 250 comments have been made on the force’s social media page since the temporary closure was announced at the start of this month, many by residents expressing concerns about the move. When the closure of the Southway site was initially revealed police said that for the duration of the planned upgrade the majority of staff and equipment will temporarily relocate to Ormskirk Police Station, about seven miles away (15 minutes drive.) It was stated that due to its age and condition, the Skelmersdale station is “no longer fit for purpose” and as such is being “upgraded and modernised from the start of June.” However, the decision has prompted concern among residents with reference being made to the number of knife-related incidents reported in recent months and fears that response times will be affected. One resident, Paul Davies, commented: “Great timing to close the police station down and relocate. If things weren’t bad

enough in Skem at the minute, it’s gonna get a lot worse now. Something else Skem now doesn’t have. Response time to any incidents are going to be non-existent.” However Skelmersdale Police responded by posting: “Please be assured though we are being proactive and doing everything we can to tackle issues, for example using our powers of stop and search, including those under Section 60, if they are justified and proportionate. We’ll do everything in our power to keep Skem safe.” Meanwhile they have reiterated that members of the Neighbourhood Team will be at the P.U.L.S.E centre in the Concourse
from 10.30am until noon every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (excluding bank holidays). A message on their social media page read: “With the majority of staff having completed the temporary move to Ormskirk, starting tomorrow (April 24) neighbourhood officers will be attending the P.U.L.S.E. centre in the Concourse shopping centre. Here you can speak to your local officers in an informal setting about any concerns you may have. “If you need to log an incident, continue to do so by ringing 101 or in emergencies 999. The Ormskirk front desk is now open and you can still report incidents online.”
Veterans pay their respects Men-Aces’ Harry tackles 200-length sponsored swim for favourite charity - using one arm! A MEMBER of the Skem MenAces Disability Football Club took the plunge to raise muchneeded funds for a charity that is close to his heart. Harry Eaton, brother of MenAces’ coach Carl, completed a 200-length sponsored swim in Skelmersdale’s Nye Bevan Pool in aid of Mencap - despite only having the use of one arm as a result of dyspraxia, a developmental disorder of the brain in childhood causing difficulty in activities requiring co-ordination and movement! The 55-year-old wanted to raise money for Mencap as the charity provides him with 24/7 support in his own home. Admirers Proud brother, Carl aid: “This was a fantastic effort as Harry used only one arm to do this fundraiser. “He had many admirers at the event cheering him on, including his support team and his carer, Nick, who also did the 200 lengths, kept count and encouraged Harry all the way. “We want to say a special thanks to staff from Nye Bevan Pool for allowing this event to
