Work finally gets underway on long-awaited redevelopment project
COUNCIL HAILS ‘NEW DAWN’ FOR TOWN! Report by Henry James
BUILDING work has finally begun this week on the long-awaited town centre redevelopment which West Lancs Council is hailing as a “new dawn for Skelmersdale.” Builders arrived on site on Monday (January 20) to start construction work on the scheme which the local authority believes will “breathe new life” into the area by bringing significant investment and new jobs. West Lancs MP Rosie Cooper also welcomed the start of work on the project which council chiefs say will provide benefits for the whole of the borough, not just Skelmersdale. Phase one will see new shops created to house Lidl and B&M Bargains stores, along with another retail unit. There will also be a “fantastic” new play area in Tawd Valley Park and a new high street will be provided to link West Lancashire College with the rest of the town centre. Enhancements will also be made to the public areas outside Skelmersdale Library. The council says that while construction work is taking place on phase one, plans will also start to be developed for future phases and the residents of Skelmersdale and the borough as a whole will be consulted on these in due course. The town centre redevelopment scheme is a partnership between the borough council, Homes England and developer St. Modwen, and is supported by the Lancashire Local Enterprise Partnership. Councillor Ian Moran, council leader and cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This is a special day for the people of Skelmersdale as building work begins to make our new town centre a reality.
Pictured at the launch of the town centre redevelopment project are St. Modwen senior asset manager, Paul Brustad; MP Rosie Cooper; council leader, Ian Moran; West Lancs Council chief operating officer, Jacqui Sinnott-Lacey; St. Modwen development director, Alex Jaques; and Caddick Construction project manager, Arthur Dawe,
“Over the coming months the town centre development will take shape and we can all look forward to the day when we start shopping in these stores and our children are enjoying the play area. “I want to thank everyone at West Lancashire Borough Council, St. Modwen, Homes England and all our other
partners who have helped make this happen. The scheme proves how ambitious the council is for the economy of Skelmersdale and West Lancashire as a whole.” Speaking to the Champion, Cllr. Moran commented: Continued inside
Victim Alex Davies
Alex Davies murder accused named
THE teenager accused of the murder of 18-year-old Alex Davies from Skelmersdale has been named as Brian Healless from Chorley. Alex’s body was found in a wooded area of Parbold Hill on May 1 last year. A post-mortem examination declared the cause of death to be stab wounds and asphyxiation. A few days later Healless, who was 17 at the time, was arrested and charged with murder. He could not be identified at earlier hearings due to a court order because of his age, but has since turned 18. Judge Mark Brown, Recorder of Preston, revoked an order banning the press from naming the defendant during a brief hearing, at which Healless was not present, at Preston Crown Court. Healless, who has pleaded not guilty to murder and possession of a bladed article, is due to stand trial on Wednesday, March 11.
