PROJECT TO TRANSFER GLENBURN 3G PITCH TO DELPH SIDE HITS BUFFERS

Lack of council support cited for failure to attract necessary funding

Report by Henry James THE people behind a project to move the disused £650,000 3G floodlit Astroturf 11-a-side pitch from the former Glenburn Sports College to Delph Side Community Primary school in Skelmersdale have said the proposals have hit the buffers. Delph Side has worked with West Lancs MP Rosie Cooper in a bid to secure the funding necessary to prepare the site for the transfer of the 3G pitches and equipment, which have not been used since Glenburn closed in July 2016. However, Jo Whitfield, school business manager at Delph Side Primary has said that because their scheme has not received “favourable support” from Lancashire County Council or West Lancashire Borough Council, they have not been able to receive backing from the business community. She said the school community was deeply upset that the project could not be fulfilled, and in a letter to parents and other headteachers she wrote: “Our intention to create a community facility for the people of Skelmersdale has not received any favourable support from Lancashire County Coun-

cil or West Lancashire Borough Council. I have recently had this reconfirmed by Rosie Cooper's office. “West Lancashire’s intention to have the Playing Pitch Strategy re-evaluated this month will call into question

whether or not this facility will remain a council priority. Without this evidence of need, we are unable to apply for, or attract grant funding. “We have also looked to the business community for possible

Rosie Cooper said: “I’ve been working closely with staff at Delph Side Primary School and SHARES in trying to arrange for the relocation of these pitches to ensure their continued use by Skelmersdale residents but neither West Lancashire Borough Council nor Lancashire County Council are prepared to assist in funding the project citing the Football Foundation’s

refusal to back the relocation with any grants. “We are still exploring alternative options but it now seems likely that these pitches will be lost to West Lancashire with Lancashire County Council being prepared to dismantle and dispose of the pitches should no new scheme come forward.” Leader of Lancashire County, Councillor Geoff Driver, responded: “We’re sorry to hear that the necessary funding couldn’t be found by this group to relocate these sports facilities. We were happy to give these pitches to them for free, provided that they could cover the cost of any relocation. “The county council was clear all along that we are not in a position to financially support these plans, as we’re facing an extremely serious financial challenge.
