Hotter pledge to raise £75,000 for charity

Mercy dash pair hailed as ‘Caring Heroes’

CARE home staff who raced to a colleague’s assistance after hearing she had been involved in a car accident have been hailed as ‘Caring Heroes’. Sam Bagnall, an activities co-ordinator at Birch Green Care Home in Ivydale, Skelmersdale, was hurt in a road accident before Christmas, suffering injuries including a broken foot and head wound. When Vicky Sudworth, acting manager at the home, and Dave Seddon, a decorator and maintenance staff member, heard that Sam had been hurt they drove to the scene to help her. Several weeks later Sam is still recovering from the accident, and thanked her colleagues for their support. Now they have been honoured as ‘caring heroes’ by Birch Green's parent company, Springhill Care Group. The Caring Heroes campaign was created to recognise the work of those in the care Continued inside

SOLAR FARM PLAN FOR LATHOM SITE Report by Kenny Parker A SOLAR energy company is set to apply for planning permission to build a 10-acre solar farm in West Lancashire. Lightsource BP, one of Europe’s leading solar energy generators, hopes to supply power to glass company NSG’s European Technical Centre based in Lathom. NSG is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of glass and glazing products for the automotive, architectural and technical markets with principal operations around the world and trading in more than 100 countries. Situated on 10 acres of land south to the NSG centre at Lord’s Cottage, Hall Lane, Lathom and also partly on NSG land, the proposed solar installation would generate 2.5 megawatts at its peak enough to power the equivalent of 720 homes - and would supply about 30% of the base’s annual electricity needs. The solar modules used by Lightsource BP, created by American company First Solar, contain glass manufactured by NSG Group and the research behind the panel coatings takes place at the Lathom centre. Electricity generated at the site not utilised by NSG will be fed back into the national grid. Prior to submitting a planning application to West Lancs Council in February, Lightsource BP are inviting the community to comment on the plans and “where relevant” shape the proposals.

Proposed installation would generate power for glass giant’s technical centre

How it might look - a Lightsource BP solar energy farm in Hampshire

A Public Community Information Evening is being held at the NSG Group’s Technical Centre in Hall Lane tonight (Wednesday, January 17) between 5.30 and 8pm. NSG Group say that as part of a drive to improve their sustainability credentials, the solar installation will help meet carbon reduction targets, saving an estimated 908 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, the equivalent of taking 193 family cars off the road. The solar company say that the array of solar modules will be designed to accommodate grazing sheep as a means of “incorporating habitat enhancement measures”.

Lightsource BP chief executive, Nick Boyle, said: “We’re excited to be working with NSG to develop a solar installation to generate safe, clean electricity for their European Technical Centre, in Lathom. “We want these plans to be the best fit for the local community, as well as the energy customer, which is why we are keen for local businesses and residents to come along to the information evening. “In addition to gaining feedback, we also want to give residents an opportunity to ask any questions they may have about the development or solar energy in general.”
