Danny Boyle with a First World War portrait

OSCAR winning film director Danny Boyle has chosen Formby Beach as one of 12 special locations across the country to hold a nationwide commemoration to mark the centenary of Armistice Day. Boyle, who was the mastermind behind the London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony, is behind a ‘Pages of the Sea’ remembrance project to create portraits of war dead on Britain’s beaches to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. The film-maker, whose works include Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting, is inviting members of the public to assemble on Armistice Day (November 11) when a

large-scale portrait of a casualty from the war will be drawn into the sand at low tide at each location and washed away as the tide comes in as an ‘informal nationwide gesture of remembrance’. The portraits will be created by 3D sand artists Sand In Your Eye. Boyle has also commissioned a poem by poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, to be read by people on the beaches. Pages of the Sea is part of ‘14-18 NOW’ the UK’s official arts programme to mark the World War One centenary. There will also be an online gallery of portraits of some of those who served in World War One for people to select someone to say a personal goodbye to on the beach or via social media if they can’t attend.
