Hundreds turn out to join Great British Beach Clean event by Danielle Thompson
Volunteers at the Victoria Road Beach clean up event on Monday, September 17
HUNDREDS of volunteers turned out to help at two events in Formby to mark the 25th national Great British Beach Clean initiative... and tackle the growing threat of plastic to ocean life, head-on! The event was part of the Marine Conservation Society’s Beachwatch programme and takes place every third weekend in September. It not only spruces up hundreds of beaches around the UK coast, but volunteers also record the litter that they find. The charity says that information volunteers have collected over the last 25 years has helped make a significant impact on
government policy – including the plastic bag charge, microplastics being banned in personal care products, better wet wipe labelling and the massive support for a tax on the range of ‘on the go’ plastic single-use items. Volunteers answered the call to turn out in Formby and helped at a clean-up event on Lifeboat Road Beach on Friday, September 14, when they collected more than 18kg of litter and at an event on Victoria Road Beach on Monday. Members of additional environmental groups attended Monday's beach clean, including members of Sealife Manchester, the RSPB, Lancashire Wildlife Trust, Gems in the Dunes, the Seawatch Foundation and Capturing the Coast.

Freshfields Care Home
A CARE worker has voiced concerns that Freshfields Care Home on College Path could be replaced by luxury homes if it is sold to a housing developer. With houses on nearby Victoria Road selling for millions it is feared that the care home, run by Leonard Cheshire and currently on the market, will not be replaced like-for-like. Bosses at the disability charity say they are ‘confident’ they can sell the care home as a going concern and have attempted to calm fears that it will be sold for housing

Documents shown to the Champion show that the home is one of 17 that will be sold by the Leonard Cheshire charity after ‘deep consideration and a thorough process of assessment’. They say the soonest they expect a sale to go through on their Formby site is spring 2019 and state that all of the funds raised from the sale of Freshfields Care Home will be ‘invested in the provision of UK community residential and outreach services’. A spokesperson for Leonard Cheshire said that it is their ‘absolute priority’ to find a service provider to sell the home to as a going concern - and that they are confident they will find ‘an appropriate provider that meets their criteria’.
