Netball stars reach out to support charity event TWO England netball stars were in Formby to help support an event which saw thousands of pounds raised for charity. Laura Malcolm and Eleanor Cardwell were invited by Crosbybased Winwood Netball Club to a tournament they arranged at Formby High School. It involved more than 200 youngsters aged between 9-17

who competed in the first ever Mark the Memories netball tournament. It was organised after three young Winwood players lost their dad, Mark Edwards, to cancer last year so the event raised money for the Mark Edwards Foundation. More inside

A PE teacher from a Formby school is set to cycle 310 miles from London to Paris today (Wednesday, July 25) to raise funds for a national cancer charity. Father of three Simon Dougherty, who lives in Southport, is head of PE at Range High School and he will take on the challenge alongside his friend Ian Baker, a father of two from Aintree, in memory of two of the school’s pupils who passed away from cancer. His cycling buddy Ian, who works with schools across Merseyside through Inspire sport, jumped at the chance to join Simon on the challenge. Each year, all of the staff and pupils from the school walk a mile in July for the Teenage Cancer Trust in memory of Matthew Miller and James Wright, who both passed away from the illness. This year, the walk, named Matthew's Mile, raised more than £500. Now Simon and Ian are hoping to boost the charity's funds by at least another £3,500. The pair were due to set off cycling at 7am this morning (Wednesday) in London and aim to reach the Eiffel Tower by this Saturday (July 28). Speaking before he left, Simon, 41, who

taught James, said: “We wanted to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust in memory of the pupils who we have sadly lost. It's a fantastic charity doing great work to help young people and as a teacher who deals with youngsters all the time and witnessing the effects of cancer first hand, it’s something that’s very close to my heart. “The training has been full-on at times

and having an operation in April added to the challenge, but we are ready to do it and hopefully raise lots of money for a great cause.” Ian, 48, added: “I have got to know Range High School very well, delivering their sports tours over the years and when Simon asked me to join him on this cycling challenge I jumped at the chance.
