Pressure group for Formby residents celebrates double triumph in Local Elections

MEMBERS of a residents’ action group are celebrating a ‘perfect election night’ - winning both of the wards they contested in Formby. In last Thursday’s Local Elections, FRAG - Formby Residents Action Group - which was formed in 2012, won both seats that were up for grabs in the area. In Ravenmeols Ward, Maria Bennett was elected seeing off Labour’s Catie Page by a margin of just 17 votes. In Harington Ward, FRAG’s David Irving won the seat with 1,279 votes to beat his nearest challenger, Labour ’s Carol Richards. It all added up to a triumphant night for the pressure group which was originally formed to fight development on the green belt. Initially it involved a group of residents living around the farmers field between Alt Road, Liverpool Road and the Formby bypass. Since then FRAG has fought against Sefton’s Local Plan and spoke up at the public inquiry representing residents concerns about infrastructure, loss of protected habitat, traffic congestion and flooding and drainage, all likely to suffer, the group claims, under the strain of new development.

Report by Danielle Thompson A delighted spokesperson for FRAG said: “We would like to say a big thank you to all our supporters. We secured a perfect election night taking every seat we contested! “We would like to thank everybody who made this possible. It was a very close fight with our main opponents resorting to some questionable tactics, however we came through on the night. “FRAG also kept control of Little Altcar and Formby Parish Council. All of the FRAG candidates that stood in Thursday's election were successful thanks to the support of our residents.” Maria Bennett added: “We were set up originally to combat building on the green belt but we have branched out now to a whole range of local issues, from affordable housing to saving trees, climate change and the environment. “The unique thing about FRAG is that we're not a national party, we are just local people standing with local residents and fighting to do the very best

for our community. How we all vote in national elections is different but that doesn't matter – we all come together to fight for local issues. We can't change national government policies, so, in a way, politics goes out of the window in FRAG. “We really weren't expecting to win both seats and I think that we were the only independent party across the country to gain all the seats that they stood for, which is something to be proud of. We also won the parish council vote by thousands, so we were very pleased with that too, we obviously have a good community backing.” The champion were unable to contact Councillor Catie Page at the time of going to print. l Full Local Elections round-up - inside
