SPEED UP NEW ROAD SAFETY SCHEME, WARN CAMPAIGNERS by Danielle Thompson
The Hurricanes
Hightown Hurricanes are brewing up a storm in world of women’s cricket Hightown St Mary’s Cricket Club has just staged its first women’s match creating a little piece of sporting history in Sefton. The Hurricanes played their opening competitive match indoors last week against the Old Xaverians Cricket Club... and won by 54 runs. The new women’s team is one of only a handful that offers women’s cricket in the Liverpool area, and is currently the only club in Sefton that provides for
both junior and adult female cricket. Sara Begg, head coach of the Hurricanes said: “I am delighted to be involved with such a dedicated and enthusiastic squad, who put in a fantastic performance in their first ever match. “Women's and girls’ cricket is now firmly established across the country and participation continues to grow. CALLS are being made for Sefton Council to install a planned new pedestrian crossing in Formby ‘without delay’ after a fast food chain announced its new outlet will open in just a few weeks time. Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson joined Ravenmeols Councillors Catie Page and Nina Killen, to lobby council officials for the road safety improvement after McDonald's applied for planning permission to open a restaurant on the site of the former MJ’s drive-thru on Altcar Road. The restaurant will open on April 17, but there is no fixed date yet for the installation of the crossing, according to the MP. Mr Esterson said: “I have asked the council to install the pedestrian crossing without delay. They have advised me that they are currently looking at

procurement options with a view to having the works completed as soon as possible. Some of the equipment at the junction is in need of replacement so they are determining the scope of works that are necessary.” When the McDonald’s planning application was initially submitted, Mr Esterson and Cllrs Page and Killen wrote to Sefton Council’s chief planning officer to say that they were concerned about the increased number of pedestrians who would be using the junction on Altcar Road, across the bypass and between the Tesco petrol station and the McDon-
ald's site, particularly young people. This was because there is currently just one light-controlled pedestrian crossing across the bypass and no light-controlled pedestrian crossing across Altcar Road on either side of the junction. Alongside planning applications, the council can often negotiate what is called Section 106 agreements for improved infrastructure and although the authority had asked that McDonald’s contribute to the scheme, this was not possible as the planning application was classed for ‘very minor alterations (for) an existing and similar use’. After the concerns were flagged up, planning officers also spoke to the owner of the land and ‘in combination with funding that Highways have already secured externally and earmarked from internal budgets, the landowner made up a significant shortfall’ for the pedestrian light crossing to be created.
