FIGHT IS ON TO SAVE SURGERY Report by Danielle Thompson
Rebecca and Jack Mangan
Couple aim to raise awareness of Tourette’s Syndrome A COUPLE whose two children both have Tourette’s Syndrome are holding an event in Formby this weekend to raise funds and awareness of the lifelong debilitating condition. Jay and Julie Mangan’s daughter Rebecca, 12, and son Jack, nine, have different variations of the neurological condition, which causes a person to make involuntary sounds and movements called tics. It usually starts during childhood and examples of physical tics include blinking, shrugging, jerking, grimacing and touching objects and other people. These physical movements can cause severe pain and injury due to their often repetitive and uncontrollable nature.

AN ACTION group formed to protect the future of essential GP services at Hightown Surgery, have launched a campaign alongside Sefton Council to save it from closure. Last week, the Champion revealed that NHS England, the body responsible for finding a provider to operate the practice in Hightown, will close the medical centre on June 8. In a letter to stakeholders, NHS England said the only party interested in running Hightown has withdrawn and they did not receive any other bids for the contract despite a national advert. Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson labelled the move to shut Hightown GP practice ‘disgraceful’ and vowed to fight the closure. Now Sefton Council chiefs have revealed that they are strongly opposed to the decision to close it and are calling for it to be reversed. A special Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting is now scheduled for Thursday, March 22 as Sefton Council believes NHS England has not followed the right process or engaged with the public properly about the closure. Cllr Ian Maher, leader at Sefton Council, said they were ‘dismayed and extremely disappointed at the way NHS England has handled this matter.’
Action group and council launch campaign to stop closure of Hightown clinic
Karl Brennan, chairman of Hightown Parish Council and a member of Hightown Village Surgery Working Group, told the Champion they will do ‘everything in their power’ to save the medical practice from closure. The group plans to pressur-
ise NHS England into running another procurement procedure in a bid to find more parties potentially able to run the surgery - and if they are not listened to, plan to consult with solicitors as they also do not believe that protocol has been correctly followed. Mr Brennan told the Champion: “The action group was formed last year after initial noises were made about the future of the surgery. “When the announcement was made last week, it was an absolutely devastating blow to the whole of the village community and especially to the most vulnerable, including the elderly and children. “We have been told that patients will be relocated to surgeries around 2.5miles away, but this is as the crow flies and unfortunately patients will need to realistically travel around six miles to get to the nearest surgery in Formby from Hightown.
