Girls ‘inspired’ by leading figures from business world YOUNG girls from schools in Formby and Crosby were given inspirational talks from leading figures in science, technology, engineering and maths. Around 100 youngsters from seven schools in the area attended a special event organised by local women's organisation, Soroptimist International of Crosby, which was held at Crosby Comrades Club. Schools involved
included Range High, Chesterfield High, Merchant Taylor’s Girls' School, Holy Family High School, Sacred Heart College, St Mary’s College, St Michael's High School . The STEM conference (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) was aimed at opening their eyes to the exciting job opportunities awaiting them in career paths which organisers
say girls do not commonly consider as a career. Speakers from some of the region’s biggest employers shared their stories on how they got into successful careers including biomedical scientists from the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Alder Hey as well as civil engineers and environmental consultants. HOUSING PLAN SET TO BE GIVEN GO-AHEAD by Danielle Thompson CONTROVERSIAL plans to build 286 homes on land north of Brackenway are expected to be given the go-ahead. Sefton Council’s planning committee are due to hear the outline application at Bootle Town Hall tonight (Wednesday). The plans for the site off the Formby Bypass, submitted by Taylor Wimpey Homes, have been recommended for approval with conditions – despite more than 200 letters of objection from concerned residents. A large number of Formby resid-
Controversial ‘Brackenway ’ scheme goes before planners ents attended a meeting held by the Formby Residents’ Action Group to discuss their concerns over the plans in January, after locals flagged up fears including that the site and the surrounding areas could flood. FRAG chair Maria Bennett previously told the Champion that local residents have “deep concerns” about this site; that the Ministry of Defence had expressed concerns at the creation of large water storage areas next to RAF Woodvale; and
that Lancashire Wildlife Trust had expressed concerns that potential flooding could potentially affect Dune Heath, one of the rarest and most protected habitats in the country. Formby Parish Council also submitted objections relating to flooding, ecology, pollution, objectively assessed need for housing delivery, accessibility and sustainable transport.
