CAMPAIGNERS CALL ON COUNCIL CHIEFS TO MAKE SEFTON FRACK-FREE ZONE Thousands sign petition after plans to drill for shale gas near Formby are revealed
ANTI-FRACKING campaigners from Formby have handed in a petition of more than 3,600 signatures, calling on the council to make the whole of Sefton a ‘frackfree zone.’ The council is expected to debate the petition at its meeting tomorrow (Thursday, January 25), after a spokesperson for Frack Free Formby addressed councillors on the issue. Earlier this month, energy company Aurora Energy Resources began the process of applying for permission to ‘frack’ for gas north of Great Altcar. Following analysis of a 3D geophysical survey, the Aberdeen-based
by Danielle Thompson company submitted a scoping request to Lancashire County Council with a view to mining for gas in the Altcar Moss. Residents in the surrounding areas, some just 850 metres from the proposed site, received letters from the company informing them that scoping is the first step in agreeing the extent and nature of environmental assessments required to inform any subsequent planning application.
