Kelly Phillips with her award.
Dancer wins award for her enterprise A DANCER from Seaforth who opened her own studio last month has been given an award for entrepreneurship. Kelly Phillips, who owns Connect Studio with business partner Michael Skelly, was named Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the Celebrating Enterprising Women awards. The event, held in Oh Me Oh My in Liverpool, was organised by The Women’s Organisation to recognise the region’s “most outstanding female-led business ventures.” Kelly and Michael initially held classes at Rimrose Hope Primary School, but soon ‘outgrew’ the venue and such was the demand they decided to open their own studio. Judges at awards said Kelly is a “young woman brimming with talent” and deserving of the accolade.
HGVs, buses and taxis would have to pay under proposal to create clean air zone but cars would be excluded from scheme Report by Tom Martin LORRIES, buses and taxis may soon be charged for using some roads in south Sefton under a scheme being considered to reduce pollution. The idea came about after the council hired global environmental consultancy AECOM to identify areas in the borough where air pollution is highest. The scheme would not charge commuters using private cars or vans but will be aimed at vehicles such as buses, coaches, taxis, and HGVs that do not meet required emissions standards. AECOM found four ‘hotspots’ of particularly high levels of pollution in south Sefton where air quality does not meet national standards. These four hotspots are as follows: l Seaforth: Princess Way from Ewart Road flyover up to and including the roundabout and flyover at the junction with Crosby Road South l Litherland: The area around the junction of

believed. According to the findings from AECOM, “both short-term and long-term exposure to air pollution affects health by shortening lives and contributing to chronic illness.” In a desperate measure to reduce pollution in these hotspots and improve air quality, the council is looking to introduce a Sefton ‘Clean Air Zone’ (CAZ) in these specific areas. A CAZ area would mean vehicles have to pay a fee to use specified roads, such as HGV lorries, buses, coaches and taxis. The news will be welcomed by Church Road Residents and District Residents Association, who are campaigning to improve air quality around the busy A5036 road. Sefton Council leader Cllr Ian Maher, said implementing a Clean Air Zone charging scheme was the “only viable way to cut pollution and encourage people to drive less polluting vehicles, including electric and low emission vehicles.” He said they will explore a number of options, but the council’s current preferred option is the Clean Air Zone charging scheme which excludes cars. Cllr Maher added that residents and businesses will be consulted over these proposals.
