Scarecrows are back for festival THE popular Scarecrow Festival will return to Waterloo this weekend and locals are urged to get involved and come up with their own special creations. The Friends of Waterloo Seafront Gardens will be holding their 12th Scarecrow Festival at Marine Gardens from 12.30pm to 4pm on Saturday, September 21. As in previous years, the scarecrow competition will be the centrepiece of the event, with entries invited on this year’s theme of Mystery, Myth and Magic. Participants are asked to register their Last year’s Scarecrow scarecrow Festival. between noon and 12.30pm on the day in Marine Garden. The festival will also feature face painting, games, craft stalls, live music performances, hot food and other refreshments. In the meantime, organisers say anyone wanting to enter the event who is looking for inspiration should check out the many examples of scarecrows from previous years by visiting the Friends’ website at www. fowsg.co.uk. The Scarecrow Festival is organised solely by volunteers from the Friends group which was set up in 2009 to help improve the four seafront gardens in Waterloo as well as nearby Potter’s Barn Park. Entry to the event is free, although donations are welcome. All the money raised will be ploughed back into the local community via the volunteer work done by group members. For more information about this year’s Scarecrow Festival, or to volunteer or donate, visit www.fowsg.co.uk or contact the Friends of Waterloo Seafront Gardens on Facebook or Twitter.

CLOSED DOWN PUB IS SET TO BE DEMOLISHED Plans made to knock down former Brooke Hotel and build 14 homes on the site Report by Tom Martin A CLOSED down pub in Brighton-le-Sands could be demolished and replaced by houses. Plans have been put forward to the council to demolish The Brooke Hotel on Brooke Road West after plans were revealed to demolish the historic pub and build 14 houses on the site. A number of landlords have been in charge of the pub in recent years and it been a venue for music and other events. It was used in the annual Together Everyone Achieves More charity pubathon, and used to donate an 11 gallon keg to fundraisers. The pub was closed for a period in 2013 and although it was revived, it closed again last year and there had been fears for its future after the building was boarded up. The pub was owned by the Ei Group, formerly known as Enterprise Inns, and the current proposals for a mix of detached and semi-detached homes have been submitted to Sefton Council by a company called The Albus Group. The plans are for all the site including the car park and bowling green, which has been the home of Brooke Hotel Bowling Club, so members will have to relocate elsewhere. Residents have spoken of their sadness at the prospect of losing the building. A planning application from The Albus Group
