PUB PUT IN LOCKDOWN BY ARMED POLICE IN HUNT FOR WANTED MAN Customers had to put their hands in the air and be searched by officers before they were allowed to leave

Anger at cost of allotments

Report by Tom Martin RESIDENTS in Litherland have spoken of their shock after police closed off roads and told locals to stay indoors after reports that a wanted man was in a pub. Armed police surrounded the Cuckoo Hotel, on Moss Lane, in Orrell Park, at around 6.30pm on Monday to arrest a man who was wanted in connection with a serious assault. Terrified customers were inside at the time and were told to put their hands in the air and searched by officers before being allowed to leave. Nearby residents were told to stay indoors for their own safety and roads blocked off, although crowds still managed to gather outside the pub to watch as officers carried out the operation. Unmarked police cars were also seen to block off nearby Hawthorne Road, in Litherland, next to the Tesco supermarket and vehicles were forced to turn around. Locals were quick to post about the incident on social media, with some saying their children were on their way to the nearby youth club at the time, but had to turn around and return to safety. Others posted images on Facebook to show police cars parked outside their house and videos emerged of around 12 armed police

officers entering the pub. One resident who lives in Orrell Park told the Champion: “I was bringing a friend home when I saw all these police cars speeding past and they stopped outside the pub and all got out with guns. “People were really worried because there were customers inside and some had sons or daughters or husbands who were inside and we could hear police shouting ‘get on the floor’ and ‘let them go.’ “The whole place was on lockdown and everyone was watching and hoping the customers were okay. “They came out one by one with their hands in the air and police searched everyone before letting them go.”
