Mariners all set for beer festival MARINE FC will once again hold their annual end of season beer festival – with four days to choose from for locals to enjoy a pint. This is the fourth year the Crosby club has organised the event, which is held to mark the end of the football campaign. The four day festival will take place at the Marine Travel Arena from Thursday, April 11 to Sunday, April 14. It will coincide with the Mariners’ last home league game of this season when they take on old rivals Buxton on Saturday, April 13 at 3pm. The hours will be 6-11pm on Thursday and Friday and from midday to 11pm on the Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the festival is free to attend with 11 cask ales and three ciders from 12 breweries on sale for just £1.50 per half pint, using tokens purchased from the clubrooms reception. Marine chairman Paul Leary said: “We have been really pleased with the success of the beer festivals that we have staged at the end of the last three seasons timed to coincide with our last Saturday home game of the season. “This year’s event sees a superb range of 11 cask ales and three ciders selected from 12 breweries nationally with the highlight of the festival being on the Saturday when we play at home against Buxton. “We are looking forward once again to working with our staff, suppliers, volunteers, and sponsors to make this event another success. “I would like to thank Kevin Murphy, managing director of Rent-a-space self-storage for agreeing, once again, to be the headline event sponsor.”

BURGLAR JAILED FOR TERROR RAID ON FAMILY HOME Gang threatened occupants and even slashed pet dog before stealing cash Report by Tom Martin
A MASKED burglar who was part of a gang who broke into a home in Litherland, threatened the family and slashed their dog with a knife has been jailed for nine years. Connor Hughes, 24, of Meadow View, Litherland, was found guilty following a shocking burglary at a house on Green Lane in January this year. The terrifying break-in happened at around 2am when the family were awoken by a loud noise and they were confronted by a gang of men who demanded cash. They threatened the family, stole an unknown quantity of cash and even slashed their pet dog, causing the animal to need treatment for cuts.

Connor Hughes
Hughes appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, April 5 for his role in the incident and he was sentenced by the judge to nine years in prison. Detective Inspector Tony O’Brien, said: “Burglaries can have a lasting impact on home owners who have every right to feel safe and protec-
ted in their own properties. “This was a particularly nasty incident in which threats were made to the occupants of the house and the family’s dog was injured. “I am pleased that Hughes will now have to spend a period of time behind bars reflecting on his actions. “Merseyside Police is committed to finding the people who are responsible for committing offences such as these and bringing them to justice. “I would ask anyone who has any information about burglary offences in their area to contact us. “I would also continue to ask the public to be vigilant as we know the vast majority of burglaries are preventable as they are often opportunistic. “Lock your front and back door even when you are in, set your burglar alarm when you go out or go to bed and consider getting CCTV. “It’s also a good idea to use light timers when you go out at night or away on holiday, keep valuables out of sight, and secure your shed and garage too. “Look out for your neighbours, especially the elderly and report anything suspicious to us.” Anyone with information about any burglary in their area can DM @MerPolCC, call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
