Community rallies to help vulnerable as crisis escalates COMMUNITIES in south Sefton are rallying together to offer support to the most vulnerable residents during the coronavirus outbreak. Residents in south Sefton want to protect elderly residents, those with underlying health conditions and anyone else who would be at risk if they contracted COVID-19 so are therefore choosing to self-isolate at home. Traders are also branching out by offering a range of different deliveries, such as food, medical supplies and other household items, that they wouldn't usually offer. A ‘COVID-19 Community Support’ group for Crosby and Waterloo residents has been set up and they will look to arrange deliveries, pick up shopping, post mail or even offer a ‘friendly phone chat’. They describe themselves as “a group of local residents who have come together during a time of crisis to help those in need”. To get in touch with this group, call or text 07557 282 540. For those with internet access, there is a Facebook group called ‘COVID-19 Mutual Aid Crosby/Waterloo’. This offers up to date information on a wide range of topics, such as the names of businesses who offer deliveries, shop closures and what goods are available in local stores. A description of the group states: “This group is for people to ask for and offer help and support during the COVID-19 outbreak and to make sure the most vulnerable people in our community are taken care of.” People are being urged to still donate to foodbanks as campaigners say people on low incomes could be pushed further into the grip of poverty and social exclusion due to a decline in the voluntary services. Some foodbanks across the country are set to close due to a shortage of volunteers and a drop donations. South Sefton Foodbank is currently still open, however, is in need of certain items including tinned food, long life milk, washing powder and noodles.

CADET SAVED A LIFE IN ‘MILLION TO ONE’ MEETING AT CHURCH Teenager attending his first ever church service used CPR on the man next to him who had suffered cardiac arrest Report by Danielle Thompson A QUICK-THIN KIN G teenager saved a stranger’s life in a ‘million to one’ chance meeting at a church in Crosby. Matthew Williams, 16, who is originally from Bootle but lives with his mum, Ann, in Crosby, was completing a school project for his Religious Education GCSE on the religions of the world, when he decided that he would attend a church service to gain an understanding of Christianity. Matthew, who is a Year 11 pupil at St Mary’s in Crosby, had never been to church before when he attended a Sunday evening service at St Luke’s Church on Liverpool Road in Crosby earlier this month. Halfway through the service, the man sat next to him, who is a professor – who, by chance, usually attended daytime services but

was at the evening service as a one-off – suffered a cardiac arrest and stopped breathing. Luckily, Matthew, who is a member of the Irish Guards Cadets in Crosby, had only just completed a reviser course learning CPR with the Cadets and immediately started performing the life-saving procedure to keep the man’s oxygen levels up for 10 minutes before the North West Ambulance Service arrived. His proud mum Ann said: “It must be a mil-
lion to one chance that Matthew was in the right place to save the man. “Firstly, he’s never been to church in his life and he was just intrigued – but what a Sunday to choose! “The family of the man, who he has spoken to, revealed that he doesn’t usually go to church in the evening but he chose that service as a one-off, as his wife was away working.
