CHARITY ‘WOULD HAVE HELPED’ THIEVES WHO RANSACKED ITS SHOP ‘Sad irony is that anyone so desperate as to steal from us could be just the people we are aiming to support’ Report by Tom Martin A CHARITY which offers food to those in need has been ransacked by thieves who caused up to £700 worth of damage to its shop. Big Help Food Club, which opened last year on Carr Meadow Hey, was targeted on Saturday, February 23 when the front door was smashed in by raiders who stole £50 and trashed the place. Staff and volunteers from the store say it's a “sad irony” because if someone had been so desperate enough to steal from a charity, they would have wanted to help them. During the break-in the thieves stole a cash till and some groceries before ransacking the shop with staff estimating it caused around £700 worth of damage. A spokesperson said: “Sadly someone has broken into our Carr Meadow Hey Charity Shop
and trashed the place. “The sad irony is any individual who was so desperate as to steal from our charity would have been someone we would have supported. Please contact us if you have any information.” Following the break-in, former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher and his charity the 23 Foundation stepped in to make a generous offer and pay for the clear-up. The Big Help Club is dedicated to helping people out of poverty and organises foodbanks, a food club and back to work programmes in deprived areas across the area. They have a number of Big Help Food Club, including the one in Litherland, which offers a wide range of food items for people on low incomes. It’s run as a membership-based scheme which allows locals to pay a weekly fee and have access to food. All stock is sourced through a partnership with FareShare, which redistributes surplus stock from retailers across the country that would otherwise go to landfill. Membership is open to all, and the project aims to not only increase accessibility to food, but to also become a local resource for the community, regardless of income. Anyone with information on the break-in can contact Merseyside Police on 101 or via the social media desk @Merpol, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
