WATER FLOODS INTO GARDENS FROM HOMES DEVELOPMENT Residents claim house builders ignored warnings Report by Tom Martin ANGRY residents in Thornton claim a housing development near their homes has become a ‘swamp’ which is now flooding their gardens. More than 180 houses are currently being built on land off Runnells Lane by Barratt Homes for the Sundial Place development. But recent heavy rain has left the site flooded and nearby residents say the water has made its way into their back gardens and also Lydiate Lane, causing traffic problems. Ernie Shelton, whose garden backs onto Sundial Place, said: “Our back garden is flooded and it doesn’t drain away. It’s an absolute disgrace.” Some residents have been forced to buy pumps in a desperate attempt to get rid of the water before it

causes damage to their homes. Julie Walker added: “Some residents have had to buy pumps to protect their own houses from these floods. “One house has an infestation of rats that fled the field when the diggers moved in.” Residents say they objected to the development when it was first submitted to Sefton Council last year, claiming it would result in flooding problems

through the use of trenches. When the area has been fully drained, we will install a small bund along the residents’ boundary to act as a barrier and prevent any further water pooling.” Thornton Parish Council vice chair George Pennington said: “We are sad that residents were left out of the initial planning process for the Sundial Place development, especially when it came to Continued inside
