NIGHT SHIFT TO BE AXED AT FIRE STATION Union claims it will delay response times putting public at risk - but bosses say it is ‘least worst option’ to cope with funding cuts Report by Tom Martin CROSBY Fire Station will no longer be manned during the night. Any late-night incidents in the area will now be dealt with by firefighters from Bootle & Netherton Community Fire Station under new measures by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS). Crosby will have ‘retained crews’ on a 30-minute recall system who will be called to duty overnight to provide support if the number of fire appliances drops below a predetermined level. The Merseyside Fire Brigade Union (FBU) claims this could lead to a delay in response times and the move is “putting the safety of the public and firefighters at risk.” Fire Service bosses say that in wake of budget cuts, this is the “least worst option” they could possibly take. A spokesperson for MFRS said the service’s Integrated Risk Management Plan for 2017-2020, which was approved after public consultation, contained

Crosby Community Fire Station.

the proposal to change the crewing systems at five fire stations to wholetime crewing between 8.30am and 8.30pm, with retained crewing overnight on a 30-minute recall. Cover will be provided overnight by Bootle & Netherton Fire Station, supported by Kirkdale Fire Station as both of these stations are able to meet the ten-minute response standard into the Crosby station area. An MFRS spokesperson said: “These proposals are a direct response to the ongoing cuts to Mersey-

side Fire & Rescue Authority’s budget, which continue until 2020. It is the least worst option available to the authority in order to manage the cuts.” Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson said: “Funding cuts by the government over the last eight years to the fire service have inevitably led to closures and changes in the hours and the number of fire engines available. “These cuts are taking a risk with the safety of the people of Crosby.”
