INSIDE THIS WEEK: Police warning over rise in shed break-ins POLICE are urging residents to keep their sheds and garages secure after a rise in break-ins. Officers say they have received a “large number of reports” in recent weeks from people in Crosby, Blundellsands, Waterloo and Thornton who say burglars have broken into sheds and stolen their bike. Most of these break-ins have occurred between 2pm and midnight. Police have advised people to check their locks and door hinges to make sure they are strong enough and if possible fit an alarm. They have also advised cyclists worried about their bike to install a ‘ground anchor’, which is an anti-theft device designed to stop bikes from being easily wheeled away or lifted into a van. For more anti-burglary advice, visit www.merseyside.police.uk/
Church needs tour guides AN historic church in Blundellsands needs volunteers to help run guided tours of the venue. St Nicholas’ Church needs to expand its heritage team and appoint volunteer tour guides for the Grade 2 listed Victorian building. Anyone interested is asked to go to the church on Thursday, January 16 between 1.30-2.30pm. Commitments are between 2-10 hours a month on a rota basis. £1M REVAMP ON WAY FOR LEARNING CENTRE
Redevelopment project will allow it to provide training courses for thousands more people Report by Tom Martin
PLANS have been unveiled to give an outdated learning centre in Seaforth a £1million makeover so it can provide training courses for thousands more people. The Sefton Community Learning Service, on Cambridge Road, could go through a “transformational development” under proposals outlined by Sefton Council. The plan is to build 2,537 square metres of ‘new build training/learning floor space’, which is hoped to attract more than 4,500 people after three years who will take up classes and courses. Sefton Council published the proposal ahead of a Cabinet meeting to be held on Thursday, January 9, when it is expected to be approved. The overall project will cost in total £1,145,000, which will be funded from a grant from the Liverpool City Regional Combined Authority. The building originally opened in 1912 as Waterloo Grammar School. The school closed in 1972, with the introduction of comprehensive education in Crosby, and the building was eventually taken over by the council and opened as the Sefton Community Learning Service. A report published by the council states: “The pro-
