FAMILY JEWELLERS ARE LEFT ‘DEVASTATED’ AFTER SHOP ROBBERY Thieves stole £75k worth of items from vehicle parked outside store Report by Tom Martin OWNERS of a family-run jewellers in Waterloo have been left devastated after around £75,000 worth of stock was stolen.

Kenlyns Jewellers, on St John’s Road, was targeted on Friday, December 21 at around 5.30pm when thieves managed to break into a vehicle outside the store and escape with jewels.

Business owners Michael and Joanne Page had been packing up stock to take to their market stall the following day when the thieves struck.

Many of the stolen items had been ordered by people for Christmas presents, including gold, silver and diamond jewellery.

Kenlyn Jewellers opened on St John's Road in 1998 and Joanne took over as owner in 2015 after her father passed away.

Joanne said following the theft: “We would like to thank everyone for your support.

Plaza to put on charity film night PLAZA Cinema will host a charity film night in aid of Sefton 4 Good.

A special adult-only screening of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs will be showing at the Waterloo venue at 8pm on Tuesday, January 8.

Tickets for the event are now available for purchase from the Plaza box office, priced at £4 for adults or £3 for concessions.

Money raised will go towards Sefton 4 Good’s Grant Fund, which provides grants of up to £1,000 to local good causes throughout Sefton.

Mike Howlett, Sefton CVS Senior Citizenship and Volunteering Officer, said: “This event will give movie fans a rare chance to see this modern classic on the big screen, and to support some great

local causes at the same time.

“We expect the screening to be a sellout, so we’re advising people to book their tickets as soon as possible.”

In 2018, Sefton 4 Good awarded £15,000 to 25 local groups, including a film-making project for young people, wheelchair basketball sessions and equipment for a variety of environmental projects.

RNLI charity volunteer is awarded an MBE AN inspirational fundraiser who has been supporting the RNLI for 12 years has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year's Honour List.

Sue Webster, 61, who was inspired to help raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) following the death of her father, decided to set up the Port of Liverpool Branch in 2008.

The group hold regular events and volunteers will spend time in and around the docks trying to raise money to help the RNLI's aims of saving lives at sea.

Sue said: “I became involved with the RNLI 12 years ago after I lost my dad who was a great supporter of the RNLI. I formed the Port of Liverpool Branch ten years ago and we are a great team.

Funds raised to send teacher to Germany for cancer treatment Report by Tom Martin

Former football club chairman dies at age of 98 Report by Tom Martin TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Marine FC chairman who helped transform the Crosby club in the 1960s and 70s after he passed away.

Alan Malcolm was appointed the top boss at the Mariners in the early 1960s and during his time in charge they enjoyed the most successful years in their history.

He planned and oversaw the opening of a new social club in 1969, which had a huge impact on the club, and helped to pave the way for success on the field in the 1970s when they won three Cheshire League titles in five years and moved to the Northern Premier League.

Marine FC announced on Friday, December 28 that Mr Malcolm passed away at the age of 98.

Marine Chairman Paul Leary added: “Alan gave his whole lifetime to supporting Marine and even into his late 80s was a regular visitor to the club especially on match days.

“I remember when he told me of the time as a schoolboy in 1932 when he saw the Pathe News film in the local cinema of the Amateur Cup final defeat against Dulwich Hamlet at West Ham in which Marine lost 7-1.

“He was a true Marine stalwart in the like of Fred Rawsthorne, Ernie Graham and Tom Culshaw and will be well remembered for his huge influence especially in the 60s and early 70s.”

David Wotherspoon, author of the history of the club, The Mighty Mariners, added: “Alan Malcolm was a huge figure in the development of Marine.

“When he became chairman the club was in the doldrums with little success on the field, only the old wooden snooker room and no obvious new sources of income.

“Alan saw the success clubs like South Liverpool had had with social clubs and persuaded an often reluctant committee to go ahead.

“He handled all the negotiations with breweries and builders and devised a whole new set of rules to accommodate the influx of new members. Those buildings 50 years on still serve Marine well as excellent facilities and as function rooms to generate income.”

A SPECIAL event held to raise urgent funds to buy a terminally-ill mum-of-three from Formby more precious time with her children has managed to top £9,000 – enough to send her for pioneering treatment in Germany.

Tricia Beaumont, aged 45, has three children aged nine, 10 and 12, Zach, Alannah and Anyaliese, who are pupils at Formby High School and at Our Lady of Compassion Primary School.

A Spanish teacher who trained at St Mary's in Crosby, Tricia was diagnosed with triple negative cancer for the third time three years ago, after twice successfully beating it and putting it into remission.

Devastatingly, this time she was diagnosed with stage four cancer which is in her liver, chest and neck as well as spreading to her bones.

She has run out of options on the NHS but the £8,000-a-week pioneering treatment abroad could help to extend her life.

The charity event at the Grand Hall on James Street in Liverpool earlier this month raised £9,010, while a Just Giving page set up online by her friend Amanda Hurst has reached £8,000 – but they are hoping to keep going with fundraising for more future rounds of the treatment.

Amanda Hurst said: “The fund-raiser was an amazing night with live music and an auction with some fantastic prizes.

Children thanked donations made to foodbank KINDHEARTED pupils from a Bootle school have been doing their best to support their local foodbank.

An appeal by Hillside High School saw youngsters asked to bring in an item of food, which was collected and then given to South Sefton Foodbank.

Headteacher Amanda Ryan said: “We all knew that the generosity of Hillside pupils and their families was never in any doubt but this year they have really gone above and beyond.

“Pupils were asked to donate an item of food, or some small change, to go to the local foodbank. In the current climate there are more and more people having to rely on foodbanks to help to feed their family and none of us could bear to think of local people having to struggle for food over the Christmas period.

“Each form group, and the staff, brought in specific items so we could make up hampers for the community. We are always reminded of just how generous our pupils, staff and families are during collections like these but the response was truly astounding.

“Thank you to everyone for all of your donations – a job well done and let’s hope that next year we will not need to support foodbanks as people will not need to use them.”

POLICE want to speak with this man in connection to a machete and arson attack in Waterloo in November.

Stanley McBrien, 25, from Crosby, is described by police as white, 5ft 8in tall, of proportionate build, with short brown hair, blue eyes, and speaks with a Liverpool accent.

Officers believe he could have information about the attempted murder of a 25-year-old man at a flat in Willoughby Road, Waterloo, on Friday, November 9.

The victim was attacked by a machete-wielding gang before they started a fire, with residents helping to put out the flames and help the man until paramedics arrived.

Detective Inspector Gary Stratton said: “Although we have arrested a number of people in connection with this incident, and charged three men, our investigation continues.

“We believe that McBrien may have information to assist so I would urge him, or anyone who knows his current whereabouts, to come forward.

“You can speak to us directly, or anonymously through Crimestoppers, which is completely independent of the police.”

25-year-old Edward Crompton, of Bowland Drive, Litherland; 36-year-old Thomas Barnes, of Crosby Road South, Seaforth; and 28-year-old Ben Shields, of Commercial Road, Liverpool, have been charged with attempted murder and are in custody to next appear on Tuesday, April 23 at Liverpool Crown Court.

A VETS has opened in one of Crosby Village’s new-look shop units – and MP Bill Esterson and his dog Othello were the first customers!

Village Vets Crosby has taken over 10 Moor Lane on a ten-year lease after agreeing with St Modwen to use one of the revamped stores to open a new branch.

Kate Higgins, principal vet and owner of Village Vets Crosby, already has a branch in Formby and she says it was the right time to make a move into Crosby Village.

She said: “This is the first time we have built a practice from scratch and after all the hard work that has gone into fitting out and equipping the surgery it was great to see that people were really impressed with the size of the building and how advanced the facilities are.

AMBITIOUS plans to breathe fresh life back into a community centre in Litherland will continue this year with more on offer for locals to enjoy.

The Champion reported in April last year how the L21 Community Judo Club, which is an official charity, took over the empty building on Ford Lane for their new home.

So far, they have been able to run judo and morris dance classes at the building, with plans to start gymnastics at some point in January.

The building still needs work to bring it up to scratch, and plans to do this are ongoing, but in the meantime there will be more classes and groups operating in the coming months.

Paul Benson, a coach at the judo club and also trustee of the charity, said: “We took over in the summer and we are currently working on updating the building to bring it

back in use again for the local and wider communities.

“We are all voluntary based, DBS checked and insured. We currently have judo and morris dance at the centre and gymnastics hopefully soon.

“This year we hope to offer free judo to all the local school children if we can secure the funding and also offer a morning a week to the local elderly residents with those isolated by their circumstances to be the priority.

“We hope to have employment tips such as interview techniques, help with CV writing and mock interviews for all ages but especially school leavers and the under 25s.”

Judo lessons are Monday and Thursday 7-8.30pm for ages 5 and over and cost £2.50.

For ages 16 and over they are run at 8.30-9.30pm and £4 each. Students get a discounted price.

Marine reveal plans for 125th anniversary season

The ups (and no downs!) of a club with an illustrious football history

Report by Tom Martin NEXT season will be a year of celebration for Marine Football Club as they mark 125 years since it was first formed.

Marine Association Football Club was founded in the summer of 1894 by a group of South Road shopkeepers in a meeting held in the former Marine Hotel (now Champs bar) with the idea of setting up a team for their sons.

To help mark the 125th anniversary occasion, there is a new club crest which will feature on a new home shirt and club tie, as well as plans to hold a celebration dinner and the publication of a book recording the photographic history of Marine from 1894 to 2019.

In the early days Marine played in a number of kits featuring the colours of gold and black before changing to white shirts in the 1920’s. AFTER a few years of playing friendlies, Marine joined the I-Zingari League in 1897 and became a strong force in local football, winning seven championships before progressing into the Liverpool County Combination in 1927 where the club stayed for just eight seasons.

After winning four championships in the ‘County Comb’ Marine moved up to the semi-professional Lancashire Combination in 1935 retaining their proud amateur status.

Marine reached the final of the FA Amateur Cup in 1932 playing Dulwich Hamlet at a packed West Ham ground in front of 22,000 spectators.

In 1969 Marine stepped up to the challenge of the Cheshire League to lay the foundations of a great era under manager Roly Howard who managed for an amazing 1,975 games spanning 33 seasons from 1972 to 2005.

In that time Roly and the late club chairman Tom Culshaw led Marine to win 28 trophies and reach the FA Cup 3rd round in season 1992-93.

Marine joined the Northern Premier League in 1979 winning the title twice in 1994 and 1995. Marine continue as members of the Northern Premier League and in the 125th season will celebrate 40 seasons as the League’s longest serving member club.

Remarkably, in the club’s history Marine have never been relegated and have only ever moved upwards in the football amateur and non-league pyramids.

ONE of Liverpool’s most senior pharmacists has received a prestigious lifetime achievement award which recognises her ‘remarkable leadership.’

Professor Alison Ewing, who is clinical director of Pharmacy for Aintree University Hospital, the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospitals, Liverpool Women’s Hospital and The Walton Centre, was presented with the award by the UK Clinical Pharmacy Association (UKCPA), for her ‘outstanding contribution’ to the pharmacy profession.

Prof Ewing manages more than 300 staff across Liverpool and was one of the first pharmacists to become a fellow of the Faculty of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

Prof Ewing said: “This is the biggest honour I’ve ever received. To be recognised by my peers and colleagues for my contribution to pharmacy is a wonderful feeling. I love my job and I’m so happy that my passion comes across in my work.”

Prof Ewing is also an honorary Chair in Pharmacy Innovation at Liverpool John Moore’s University, and was praised by the UKCPA judging panel for her dedication to improving patient care.

Temporary car park set up at docks

How the new stadium will look.

Stadium plans unveiled for City of Liverpool FC Report by Tom Martin CITY of Liverpool FC's plans to move out of their temporary home in Bootle and build a new stadium in Fazakerley have edged forward after impressive blueprints were revealed.

Fan-owned COLFC, who currently play their home fixtures at Bootle FC’s TDP Solicitors Stadium, announced in March they wanted to create their own home on land between Longmoor Lane and Aintree Lane.

Design images were released last week

by Liverpool-based architecture firm The Studio RBA, which shows the true scale of the club's ambition for the stadium.

Under the proposal, the ground will have a capacity of 5,000, it will include a fan zone, state-of-the-art training facilities and an education block.

COLFC, known as The Purples after the colour of their shirts, were only formed in 2015 but have taken the non-league pyramid by storm.

They have won two cups and earned promotion in their first ever season after attracting an unusually large crowd for this level of football.

They even found support in the form of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in June last year, who was pictured holding the Purples shirt after watching a special match organised by the club for asylum seekers, refugees and homeless people.

COLFC are currently top of the Hallmark Security League Premier Division and if they gain promotion, they will earn a place in the Division One league of the Northern Premier League, which is the eighth tier of English football.

A spokesperson for the club said: “It is our ambition to deliver a stadium that is genuinely unique to COLFC, with innovative and sustainable design features being developed that the board believes will enthuse our members, supporters and the wider community, as well as clearly display the ambitions of the club to progress through the football pyramid and provide a Community Football Stadium that the city and indeed the city region can be proud of.”

A TEMPORARY car park has been opened at Liverpool's Kings Dock for the next 18 months as work continues to build a permanent one nearby.

The Champion reported how a huge blaze on New Year’s Eve in 2017destroyed the former car park at the dock and burnt out more than 1,000 vehicles.

Work on a replacement car park is underway and is due toopen at nearby Monarch’s Quay in the summer of 2020, which will be nine storeys and have a capacity for 1,450 cars.

In the meantime, a temporary parking facility, which is four storeys and can hold 550 vehicles, opened on Friday, December 28.

Liverpool City Council say it will support the city’s waterfront venues for the next 18 months, including those held at the Echo Arena and the ACC Liverpool.

Councillor James Noakes, Cabinet member for Highways, said: “Although the fire itself was devastating in its impact on the car park, the dock’s close proximity to the city centre meant several other major car parks and the public transport system have been able to ensure that it’s been very much business as usual for ACC Liverpool.

“Not one event has been cancelled and one year on plans are in place to ensure a new, bigger car park will give ACC Liverpool a facility that will more than meet its growing needs and help the rest of the site redevelop in the coming years.

“We must not forget that it has been a traumatic experience for those whose cars were inside and, as well as the complex process of negotiating an insurance claim, this first year anniversary will be a difficult time for them.”

Mersey Fire and Rescue Service recently concluded that temperatures during the 2017 blaze reached over 1,000 degree Celsius, which completely compromised the structure requiring the car park to be fully demolished.

Although no vehicles have been able to be salvaged, some were not burnt out and those are being taken to a secure compound for owners to retrieve any belongings.

Many of these will, however, have suffered water, heat and smoke damage during the blaze, which at its height had 21 fire appliances tackling it, protecting the surrounding buildings.

From dressing room disasters to Slimming World Consultant!

As Jade Limb stared into the changing room mirror, squashed into a size 16 top, she noticed the fear in her face. She was trapped. As she struggled to remove the top, recent comments flooded her head.

“Standing there, feeling paralysed in my own fear, my brain began to replay all the negative comments and experiences I had received recent months”. She recalls, “Family members talking and laughing about how much weight I had put on, and having to constantly tell people that I was definitely not pregnant.”

Somehow managing to snap herself out of her trance, Jade remembers noticing the sadness in the girl in the mirrors eyes, and how her hair was unkempt. She was a girl who had clearly given up. “It wasn’t just my weight. It was my whole appearance. I had no pride in myself at all. I felt ugly, so I would comfort eat, which would make me feel bloated and even more ugly, so I wouldn’t look in a mirror or spend anytime on myself. I didn’t even bother to brush my hair. This would then lead to more negative comments and feelings, so I would comfort eat again - it was a dangerous cycle I was stuck in. I felt like I didn’t deserve to have nice things, like clothes or beauty treatments. It felt like a never ending pit of misery”.

It hadn’t always been this way. Although she’d never been happy with her weight, Jade had always found the time to put an effort into her appearance. She spent a lot of time out socialising, being an outgoing girl. Then, when she got into a new relationship, her life dramatically changed. “I went from living at home, being out with friends every weekend, to moving into my first home with my boyfriend, in a job that I needed to work long hours” she says. Like many before her, content in a relationship, alongside laziness, lead to more takeaways. “I would be having a takeaway every night, usually with a fast food meal for dinner - it was just so easy to access this food as I was surrounded by takeaway shops and fast food restaurants. But as the weight began creeping on, I became more withdrawn and miserable. I hated my job, I had no confidence and life was looking really bad at this time”.

Somehow managing to remove the top, Jade went running from the shop and the dreaded mirror, red-faced and on the verge of tears. “After my boyfriend Kevin managed to calm me down, I decided enough was enough. I was through feeling like this and I knew I had to take action”. One of her close family members had joined recently joined Slimming World, and encouraged Jade to go to group with her. Feeling like she had nothing left to lose, Jade went along to her local

group. “As I listened to the consultant talking about the plan, I was in awe. How was it possible that the plan allowed you to eat carbs, such as potatoes, pasta and rice, and still lose weight. The more food I enjoyed the food optimising way the more weight I lost, it was truly amazing” Jade managed to achieve her target weight, taking her to a total of 3 stone lighter within 22 “I am no longer held back by my weight and am a happier healthier more involved mum and girlfriend, my family have gained so much from Slimming World, it really has changed my life.”

PLANS for a pub in Thornton to extend its opening hours until 1.30am have caused concern for some nearby residents who are worried about late-night noise.

The Nags Head, on Green Lane, owned by Greene King, has applied to Sefton Council for permission to shut its doors at 1.30am on Friday and Saturday – an hour later than their current closing time.

They also want to start selling alcohol at 9am instead of 11am and play live/recorded music from 9am instead of 6pm.

The pub’s owners have also applied for permission to show films and ‘performances of dance.’

A decision is due to be made by Sefton Council at a Licensing SubCommittee to be held on Monday, January 7.

However, some nearby residents are concerned it could lead to noise later at night which would disturb The Nags Head pub in Thornton. their sleep.

One local, who lodged an objection with the after 2am before we will be able to get to council against the application, said: “I think we sleep.”

A spokesperson for the Nags Head said: “We put up with a lot of noise at present.

The team managed to finish a credible sixth and the girls themselves picked up several wins with Grace Michell finishing 30th overall, Lilly-Ann Grayson 32nd, Annabelle Montagu 34th and Sophia Neophytou 35th in their individual rankings.

JAMIE Carragher is calling for more support to help homeless people after describing the “national problem” as “devastating”.

The Bootle-born former Reds star was speaking to BBC Breakfast when he renewed his efforts to raise awareness about the dire situation of homeless people not only in Liverpool but also in the UK. HUGH Baird College students and a tutor have been awarded for completing a new career-boosting challenge.

First year Hugh Baird College A-level students, Cameron Ferguson and Harry Tyrrell have both achieved their bronze and silver iDEA awards alongside A-level Computer Science tutor, Beth McCue. iDEA is a programme developed by the Duke of York that helps develop digital, enterprise and employability skills through a series of online challenges and events where you can win career-enhancing badges, unlock new opportunities

and gain industry recognised awards.

To complete each award, the students are set challenges split into five main categories; citizen, worker, maker, entrepreneur and gamer.

Beth McCue, A-level Computer Science tutor, said: “I think iDEA is an excellent opportunity for students to develop their digital skills in an easy and rewarding way. The badges are split into bite size chunks that can be completed in a relatively short amount of time.

School marks centenary of army’s first infantry officer of black heritage

Patients give views on NHS experiences A HEALTH event in Crosby saw locals invited to give feedback on how to improve hospitals, GP practices and care services over the next 30 years.

Around 40 local people attended NHS 70: Past, Present and Future event, held at Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, where they took part in Healthwatch England’s 'national conversation'.

As part of this, people were asked to comment on how important they thought technology would become, including the use of robots, in surgery.

The views and comments were fed back to Healthwatch England with a report to be produced early next year.

The event also saw the official launch of Healthwatch Sefton’s Independent Complaints Advocacy service.

David Evans, independent com-

plaints advocate, and Dawn Thomas, Tier 1 advocate, explained that they can help when anyone wants to make a complaint about the service they have received from the NHS. The level of support can be anywhere from having a self-help pack being sent out to guiding you through the NHS complaints process.

To kick the event off, people watched a video showcasing the different platforms that have run alongside the NHS which have given the public and patients a voice on the NHS and care services they use. Maureen Kelly, Chair of Healthwatch Sefton, said: “From the establishment of community health councils to our current Healthwatch, it has been an impressive journey and demonstrates how the public voice can and does make a difference.”

LYDIATE Primary and Nursery School held an exhibition of pupils’ work on the two world wars while also marking the centenary of Walter Tull – the first infantry officer of black heritage in the British Army.

Walter Tull was also the second black footballer in Football League history (playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town) and the school’s Children wore uniforms to showcase their work exhibition is part of Tull100 on the First and Second World Wars.

Patients now able to book appointments with GPs at evenings and weekends PATIENTS in Sefon will now be able to book general practice appointments in the evening and weekends.

College staff to strike in pay row Report by Tom Martin HUGH Baird College union members are to take strike action over a pay row.

Staff at the Bootle-based college who are members of the University and College Union (UCU) have unanimously voted for industrial action after claiming that their pay has declined by 25% over the last decade.

Staff at the college will join a second wave of strikes at colleges in England following industrial action by six colleges last year.

The union, who say they will meet as soon as possible to discuss the next steps in the campaign, claim the pay gap between teachers in colleges and schools currently stands at £7,000.

UCU head of policy Matt Waddup said: “It is a testament to the strength of feeling about their treatment that UCU members have voted in such large numbers to take strike action.

“The college will face significant disruption in the new year unless it agrees to do more to address the pay and conditions of staff.”

Arts group is set to start its 50th year with a talk on gold

Strictly for Woodlands event raises £30,000 for hospice Report by Henry James WOODLANDS Hospice helpers hosted their annual Strictly for Woodlands Fundraising event at the Titanic Hotel, Liverpool.

The event raises funds for the hospice to provide vital quality care and services to its patients and their families.

More than 350 guests dressed in their finest attire to watch 11 brave people take on the challenge of dancing a Latin or Ballroom Dance routine and compete for the coveted Woodlands Glitterball Trophy.

The evening was hosted by presenter, DJ and writer, Ellie Phillips – daughter of broadcaster, Roger Phillips.

The dancers were also judged by a panel of professional dance judges on the night as well as the

audience voting for who they wanted to see crowned as winner. Before the main event, the guests enjoyed a three course meal and they were joined by some of the patients and staff.

After all of the contestants had competed and while the audience votes were totted up, the guests were treated to a performance from the Group Dancers made up of Woodlands Hospice staff who entertained the crowd with their fabulous 70’s inspired routine.

The Judge’s winners, Mark Farrell and Sophie Penman, received a perfect score of 40 after achieving all 10’s from the Judges for their energetic rock’n’roll routine!

A spokesperson for Woodlands Hospice said: “So far, the event has raised an incredible £33,000 for the Hospice.

“We’d like to thank everyone who took part in making this years’ event such a wonderful evening and a massive success for the Hospice!”

THE Arts Society Crosby is marking its 50th anniversary.

There are more than 90,000 members for the 385 branches around the world, but the one in Crosby was the 29th to be set up in 1969.

The Arts Society is a leading arts education charity, which brings people together through a shared curiosity for the arts.

Appropriately for this golden anniversary, the first talk of the new year will be entitled ‘Good As Gold.’

The speaker, Alexandra Epps, is a well known figure in the

London art world, and lectures at Tate Modern, Tate Britain and the Guildhall Gallery.

She will explain the symbolism and significance of gold throughout the ages, and might leave members of the audience looking at their own jewellery in a different light!

The meeting will be held in St Michael’s Church Hall, Blundellsands at 2pm on Wednesday, January 9.

Anyone who is not a member is warmly invited to come along and enjoy the lecture by paying £6 on the door.

Students designed guitar used in Jools Holland’s Hootenanny!

Report by Tom Martin A GUITAR designed and created by north Liverpool students was played during Jools Holland's New Year's Eve show!

The annual Hootenanny show was broadcast on Monday, December 31 when the musician and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra returned with a whole host of guests to ring in the New Year.

One of the guitarists in the band, Mark Flanagan, was playing an instrument designed and made by students from North Liverpool Academy, who teamed up with Studio School and Liverpool Life Sciences UTC to carry out the project.

It took six months to complete and they had to call upon the help of Liverpool-based guitar maker Ray Palf to make the custom-built electric guitar.

A truly unique project, the students from the three schools worked together to design the body of the guitar and produce technical drawings and build softwood models of the final design.

All the while they had to liaise with Mark, to ensure that the specifications were met throughout the process.

Eric Ferrer, North Liverpool Academy student, and core member of the design team said: “It’s been a new experience and I’m really grateful that we got the opportunity because it’s not something that anyone can say they’ve done before.�

Mark Flanagan told the students from the three schools of his delight on receiving the finished guitar: “It’s fantastic, I’m so pleased with this, it’s

War mural painted onto scout unit A PERMANENT reminder has been painted in Crosby of the sacrifices made by war heroes.

A stunning mural has been created at All Saints with St Frideswyde Church, on Forefield Lane, by local artist Vicky Williams,

along with the help of two girl guides.

It has been painted onto the side of a scout storage unit and faces a wild life garden which will soon be dedicated in memory of former Merchant Taylors’ School teacher,

Sian Tickle.

SEFTON residents are being urged to get vaccinated to protect themselves and others from harmful diseases.

Bill Esterson attended the annual Westminster Flu Day to learn about the importance of getting immunised to support good health at all stages of life. The Sefton Central MP urged constituents to attend their local surgery when they or people they care for are invited to get immunised.

He said: “Only clean water rivals vaccines at reducing infectious diseases. They are lifesavers. In the UK, immunisation programmes have meant that diseases that our grandparents used to fear, and which were once the norm, such as polio, are now very rare and in some cases eliminated.

“Staying up-to-date with your vaccinations is really important and can help protect yourself and those around you against infectious diseases like the flu.”

Westminster Flu Day is an annual Parliamentary event sponsored by the ABPI Vaccine Group in partnership with the British Lung Foundation, Carers Trust and Royal College of Nursing and with the support of the Department of Health and Social Care and Public Health England.

The NHS offers free vaccines to babies for the following diseases: diptheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, meningitis B, rotavirus, pneumonia, meningitis C, measles, mumps, rubella.

Children aged two to nine are routinely offered the flu vaccine.

Girls aged 12-13 are offered the HPV vaccine which protects against cervical cancer, and all children aged 14 can have a meningitis A, C, W and Y jab.

All over 65s can get a free flu vaccine each year and over 70s receive a shingles jab.

Some vaccines are also available to people in certain risk groups, such as NHS workers, pregnant women and people with long-term heath conditions.

Mr Esterson added: “Vaccination is so important not just for yourself but for others around you such as very young or elderly people who may have very compromised or underdeveloped immune systems and who can become very poorly with these entirely avoidable infectious diseases.”

It takes more than a power cut to stop us enjoying ourselves TALK about the best laid schemes of mice and men - well over the festive period they certainly ‘ganged aglay’ so far as this man was concerned.

All was going splendidly on Christmas Day morning.

I had just put the phone down after wishing two friends a Merry day and was just telling dogs Tina and Cinders that we would start preparing our Christmas lunch at about noon - when suddenly my little world was plunged into darkness.

The lights went out, the radio stayed on but stopped charging - and it dawned upon me that it had happened again.

You may remember about two and a half years ago when my home became bereft of electricity.

Well it happened again - though it has now been fixed by a kind electrician.

Anyway, I was actually able to roast my festive duck and all its trimmings, as thankfully a light remained on in the kitchen as well.

So since we always have our Christmas lunch and tea in candlelight anyway, that all went well, if somewhat later than planned.

Now I have a crafty plan which I think will restore lights, TV and landline phone to operational status - the only slight fly in that ointment is that there is just the chance that my action immediately will blow the main fuse again and I shall lose the use of my cooker, and the means to recharge my laptop currently running on battery power, as are my mobile phone and radio.

And since I really don’t want completely to ruin what's left of my New Year's Eve celebrations I have made the executive decision safely to leave this plan on the shelf until after January 1.

I have just returned from my first post-Christmas shopping expedition, brought on by a distinct shortage of dog food.

Having bought that at my usual supermarket I had a poke around to see what post-Christmas bargains human foodwise I could find. And to my delight I came across a half-price Beef Wellington.

I had never tasted one before so I treated myself

while I still had the means to cook it, and looked forward to a splendid evening meal.

Tell you what - I'm very glad I didn’t find it in time for Christmas lunch.

I followed the cooking instructions to the letter, which of course meant the beef was somewhat well done for my taste - but my complaint was that this slab of beef would have made a splendid tread for the tyres of a heavy lorry. ‘Disappointed’ is hardly the word for it.

I suppose the only thing for it now is to order this delicacy in a pukka restaurant and find out what it should really be like.

Don’t misunderstand me - even given the woe that befell us, Tina, Cinders and I enjoyed what we cobbled together of our traditional celebrations.

It takes more than a miserable power cut to stop us enjoying ourselves.

And though I am not one usually to make New Year resolutions, I have made one for 2019.

That is to make next Christmas the best we've had since we’ve been left to our own devices - and perhaps just a tad more forward planning would be a good idea too - that way I could enjoy my coffee and cheeseboard at the close of the meal difficult if like me this time round, you forgot to buy any cheese!

Anyway, can I wish each and every one of my readers a happy and prosperous New Year, with good health and, if you have them, good dogs!

‘Angel’ statue used in campaign to highlight impact of knife crime EVERTON FC and its charity partner are renewing their plea to crackdown on knife crime.

The club and Everton in the Community has been working on the ‘Real Men Don’t Carry Knives’ campaign in the last year to raise awareness around knife crime and its consequences, among a number of other initiatives.

A huge sculptor known as the Knife Angel was brought to Liverpool thanks to a collaborative effort from the charity along with The Regenda Group, Merseyside Police, Royal Liverpool and Liverpool Cathedral – all in the hope of highlighting the impact of knife crime.

The 27ft tall sculpture of an angel, which was made out of more than 100,000 handed-in knifes, now sits outside Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral near the city centre to remind passers-by of the dangers of knife crime in the local community.

A total of 100,000 blunted blades were collected from 43 different police forces in the UK. Artist and sculptor, Alfie Bradley, made the five-andhalf-tonne angel over a period of two years.

Families of victims of knife crime have also inscribed names of their loved ones which have been added to the piece of art.

Fab Four museum expanding

A MUSEUM dedicated to the Fab Four is expanding to open a new café and bar after enjoying a bumper first six months.

The Magical Beatles Museum was opened in July and hopes the new facilities, together with the relocation of the Liverpool Tourist Information Centre to its Mathew Street building in November, will further boost visitor numbers.

The attraction was launched by Roag Best, brother of ‘fifth Beatle’ Pete Best, with support of a tailored funding package from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.

Having secured and renovated the five-story Victorian Warehouse where the museum is based, Best now hopes to boost visitors by at least 70 per cent over the next 12 months, creating 20 new jobs.

The concept takes visitors on an interactive tour of Beatles history, with Roag’s 1,200 item personal collection telling the story each step of the way. Rare finds on display include Pete Best’s drumkit, George Harrison’s Futurama guitar and John Lennon’s Sgt. Pepper medals.

Best said: “Growing up, I wasn’t aware of how famous the Beatles truly were, I just loved spending time with my four friends – John, Paul, George and Ringo.

“A lot of items that I’ve held on to from this period are now of huge interest to fans, and it’s great to be able to give people a unique insight into the band’s history.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the interest from tourists over the past six months and it’s only set to increase going forward!

“Opening the new café and bar will help us to build on this success, making sure that people can spend the full day exploring the museum and discovering the real story of how four lads from Liverpool conquered the globe.

“We worked with Lloyds Bank to secure the site, and the relationship team have been a huge support ever since. They really understand the business and what we’re trying to achieve and are always on hand to provide guidance when we need it.”

Impressive run of form for Bucks continues Bootle 3 Hanley Town 0

BOOTLE’S impressive run of form continued as three second-half goals helped them overcome a well-organised Hanley side, writes Connor O’Neill.

Joe Doran's side came into the game on the back of a massive 2-0 win over City of Liverpool on Boxing Day. The Bucks were simply brilliant against Craig Robinson’s side and after producing a fine defensive display went ahead through Carl Peers’ wonder strike from 25-yards out.

Before a Dave Thompson own goal, 20 minutes from time, sealed all three points.

But here against a Hanley side, who currently sit second bottom in thet table, the Bucks were made to dig deep and produce a patient and disciplined display to earn all three points.

Naming an unchanged team from Boxing Day, Doran’s side struggled to find their rhythm in the opening stages, but they did go close through Ben Cartwright.

The centre-back, playing his third game for the club, saw his header from a Liam Loughlin corner cleared off the line by Josh Bristow.

Further chances followed for the Bucks with Peers firing over before Hanley stopper Kyristian Burzynski denied Ryan Cox from closerange.

Cox’s afternoon, however, soon came to an abrupt end when he was carried off after picking up a suspected knee injury.

While at the other end, the visitors best chance fell the way of George Shaw.

A long ball over the top sent Shaw in the clear, but his half-volley from distance bounced wide of the far post.

But on 67 minutes the Bucks broke the deadlock.

Some neat play between Ste Jones and Warren Jevons saw the latter pull the ball back to Peers whose effort deflected over Burzynski and into the roof of the net.

Five minutes later and Peers had his second.

Once again substitute Jevons played his part, the forward broke down the right before cutting inside and letting fly with an effort that was pushed away Burzynski - but Peers was on hand to fire the rebound into the bottom corner of the net.

Four minutes later and two became three.

Jevons was once again denied by Burzynski with keeper doing well to block the former Remyca man's effort - but from the resulting corner, Daniel Murphy rose highest to head the ball into the top corner of the net.

Further chances followed for Doran's side with Lee Hughes and Jones both being denied

by Burzynski - before Jevons headed over Kieran Halligan's cross.

While at the other end, the visitors twice came close to a consolation in the closing stages.

First, Lewis Salmon latched onto a Shaw through ball and after rounding the onrushing Jack McGovern the forward looked destined to score, but Bootle goalscorer Murphy got back and produced a fine goalline clearance.

Salmon soon went close again but was this time denied by another fine block from Cartwright, before McGovern saved Shaw's follow-up to ensure the Bucks made it three consecutive clean sheets.

In 2017 Sefton Community Learning took on the challenge to include an allotment for the community and for our learners who wanted to know more about growing their own produce before setting up j^[_h emd l[][jWXb[ fbej Wj ^ec[$ M_j^ W Yeh[ dkcX[h e\ lebkdj[[hi we took on that challenge preparing the ground for the produce that will grow, ready for next season. It is based in Beach Road, Litherland, where there are a large number of raised beds including an orchard. The aim is \eh j^[ fheZkY[ _i je X[d[Åj j^[ community by supplementing the Community Pantry and Food Bank as part of the community meals j^Wj Wh[ e\\[h[Z [l[ho m[[a _d J^[ Bistro at Cambridge Road. Some of the ESOL students are now supporting other learners that are new to learning in our centre.

Sefton’s Aspiring Instructors programme is recruiting for new participants for its 2019 course. Aspiring Instructors is a 16 week part time course targeted at unemployed Sefton residents and designed to help get people into a new career within the ifehji" Åjd[ii WdZ b[_ikh[ _dZkijho$ :[l[bef[Z Xo j^[ YekdY_b" part funded by the ESF Ways to Work programme, Education WdZ Ia_bbi <kdZ_d] 7][dYo :[fWhjc[dj Mehai WdZ F[di_ed :MF " j^[ Yekhi[ ^[bfi je _cfhel[ ia_bbi WdZ [cfbeoWX_b_jo \eh residents across the borough.
