POLLUTION levels caused by traffic in an area of Bootle is so bad that Sefton Council may be forced to start charging certain vehicles to use the roads. The local authority is so concerned over nitrogen dioxide in parts of south Sefton that they hired global environmental consultancy AECOM to identify specific areas where air pollution is highest. AECOM has found four ‘hotspots’ of particularly high levels of pollution and these have now been designated as Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs), which means air quality does not meet national standards. The Bootle hotspot is the busy junction of Millers Bridge and Derby Road, with the other three located in Litherland, Seaforth and Waterloo. The cause of the increased levels of nitrogen dioxide compared to other areas of Sefton has been blamed on the expansion of the Port of Liverpool and dock-related traffic. According to the findings from AECOM, “both

short-term and long-term exposure to air pollution affects health by shortening lives and contributing to chronic illness.” In a desperate measure to reduce pollution in these hotspots and improve air quality, the council is looking to introduce a Sefton Clean Air Zone (CAZ) in these specific areas. A CAZ area would mean vehicles have to pay a fee to use specified roads, such as HGV lorries, buses, coaches and taxis.

Cllr Ian Maher, Labour Leader at Sefton Council, said: “For some people who live in Sefton, air pollution is an important concern and the quality of the air we breathe is an issue that affects everyone. For this reason, last year I instructed a team of officers to explore all available options to address air pollution in Sefton. “This work followed on from a number of significant actions that were already in place to improve air quality in the borough. “However, we need to do everything we can to protect the health and wellbeing of all our residents. AECOM’s report concludes that the only viable option left to make a significant difference to air quality in the areas most affected by traffic pollution is to implement a charging CAZ to cut pollution and encourage people to drive less polluting vehicles, including electric and low emission vehicles.
