Report by Tom Martin
Thomas receives his restored, mounted axe from CFO Garrigan
Merseyside’s oldest surviving former firefighter presented with new axe MERSEYSIDE Fire & Rescue Service’s oldest surviving former firefighter, who grew up in Bootle and now lives in Maghull, relived his pass-out when he was presented with a restored axe by the Chief Fire Officer at the Service’s Heritage Centre. Thomas Beevers, 102 originally received the axe in 1950 when he
passed out from his recruit course. When the great-great-grandfather attended MFRS’ pass-out parade in April 2019 as an invited guest, he told the Chief Fire Officer about his axe but mentioned it had rusted in his shed.

PLANS to open a wrestling school in Bootle will be dealt a knockout blow by Sefton Council, despite hundreds of people backing the idea. Fighting Spirit Wrestling wants to open on Berry Street but the local authority isn’t looking favourably on the proposal and at a Planning Committee meeting due to take place today (Wednesday, September 25) they are expected to dismiss the application. This is despite the council admitting that “hundreds of comments have been made in support of the application”, as well as a petition in favour of idea. Those in favour all claim it would be a “valuable asset to the community which lacks such facilities” and can ‘boost the health, wellbeing and confidence of many.” In a report published ahead of the Planning Committee meeting, the council revealed their intention to reject the wrestling school, although this is not a decision set in stone and could change.
