CASH BOOST FOR CENTRE Strand bearing fruit for council, claims leader SEFTON Council’s takeover of the Strand Shopping Centre appears to be already bearing fruit with the Bootle site generating £1million in 2017/18, which will be spent on local services. St Leonard’s is home to one of largest foodbanks in the country
A COMMUNITY centre in Bootle, which is home to one of the biggest foodbanks in the UK, has been given a £75,000 cash boost to support its services. St Leonard’s Youth & Community Centre will receive the money from the Steve Morgan Foundation after it was picked by the charity as a worthwhile cause. The centre, on Peel Road, is the home of South Sefton Foodbank, which is one of the largest in the UK and supports hundreds of locals living in the area. The foodbank provides around eight tonnes of food a month and co-ordinates ten different distribution centres.
Report by Tom Martin The £75,000 grant will help towards the centre’s many services as well as help fund the centre manager’s salary for the next three years. Debbie Shelley, St Leonard’s centre manager, said: “We are very grateful to the Steve Morgan Foundation. Knowing that my role is secure for the next few years allows us to focus on supporting the people we help and move forward with our plans for the future.”
